Doesn't even touch Kelly's. Haven't bothered to sit through Leona's.

Carry on, SLD! In my opinion, you are usually spot-on with your critiques. Nevertheless, I so appreciate you doing the play by plays and really enjoy your
commentaries. Thanks so much!!!

Not great but probably my favorite Carly performance so far. Definitely better than David A.

Not sure what the judges will say about the song choice.Simon recommended she sing it, so I'm not sure what he will say. |

Carly has the chops.
But IMO, she's...phrasing-challenged (among other things that hinder her from being a truly great singer/performer). |

Carly isn't as good as she thinks she is.
She is not the second coming of Kelly. Sorry Carly. Go away now. |

Carly Smithson.
Without You. If the rehearsal clip is any indication, this will suck in her lower range and be a home run in the upper range. We'll see. I like the orchestra intro, and I actually like Carly's first line very, very much. Her intro reminded me of someone's voice, and I'm sure if I had awhile to think it through, I'd remember who it was. But this is moving enough, and for once this season, her controlled voice sounds convincing. Contrary to what I thought would happen, when she goes into the upper range, she misses several notes, some badly, and the volume is missing. Perhaps she didn't have the voice she thought she'd have to work with, I dunno. On balance, a 6, although the first half was fantastic for me, and the second half killed the deal. Randy: I liked that you challenged yourself. Once you hit the middle of the song, the power parts, it was fine. The beginning was loosey-goosey for me. But it was pretty good. Paula: I actually think that you showed some vocal restraint in the beginning of the chorus, then soared. Make it your own, especially for a great artist like Mariah. Simon: I really wanted to hear you sing this song before Mariah week. Direct comparison, could you pull it off? I don't think you did. Audience: BOO! Simon: Sorry. I think you're overthinking everything, holding yourself back at the end too much. |

She looked very good and will get votes for bringing up Michael.
Did anyone else feel like she didn't put enough emotions into the performance? It felt like she was building up to something she never reached. |
