It will be interesting to see how the tribe swap changes the family dynamic. Even though eccentrics Chet and Kathy would normally have a good shot at making FF4, they both seem too weak to keep around. Chet especially seems like a natural target for a strength boot. Kathy might get lucky and survive to the merge. At that point, being a non-threatening entity does become a postive for her.
I wish we had seen more of Ami. I still have no clue where she fits in to the family dynamic. |

Gosh, they sure didn't do a very good job of selecting new families, did they? Looks like some M carnage coming up at the purple tribe. Can some orange
children step up into a parent role?

We look at her, see a middle-aged lady, and want her to be an M. She's not, she acts like a nine-year-old blurting out every thought or emotion that enters her head, idolizing her superheroes, and not lifting a finger to provide for herself. So she seems odd. However, if she looked like, say, Mary, I think we would all be rolling our eyes but saying "D" without hesitation.) |

Wow, there goes our last chance at a father, especially with only 4 guys left. I think most of the ratings are obvious, and the only one debatable is Ami. Ami
kind of felt like a daughter this episode, saying that she would rely on what the rest of the people did (mainly the mothering of Tracy).

This is not a good season for Families. :P
It is interesting, though, just how upset the Airai were at losing their Father figure. James, for all his macho strut, admits that Jonathan was the glue the tribe needed and that he is going to be hopeless at leading the tribe by himself. |

Whole different kind of family this season.
Ozzy isn't a son at all in my view - he's the provider, so wouldn't that make him the father figure? It doesn't work very well because he's young, but still. James is now a polygamist hahahah. Lots of wives. |

I agree, AMAI, that Ozzy has stepped up to the Father role. Someone (Cirie?) made a comment about how Ozzy and Erik were like a father lion teaching his cub
how to hunt, etc. And Cirie seems like the only Mother left. I think all our Eccentrics have been dispatched, leaving us with a mom, a dad, and a bunch of
kids. Will we see a traditional FF4 consisting of Mom (Cirie), Dad (Ozzy), son (James, Erik or Jason), and daughter (Eliza, Parvati, Amanda, Ami or Alexis)? Or
will we see that dreadful scenario of no parents, all children F4? So much can change with the merge,but if I had to pick today, this would be my guess for F4:
Cirie Ozzy Amanda Eliza That and $4 will buy you a cup of Starbucks coffee.

Ozzy's speech about his pride at seeing Eric enjoy himself at the reward was all Father. It could have been seen as Big brother, but I agree that the Lion
King comments certainly set it as a father-son relationship.
Holy Oedipus! The Son opened the season by saying his goal was to beat the Father. |

The tribe has kept winning without Jonathan. James just realized that with Jonathan gone the girls would be running the tribe.We have a fatherless and motherless tribe, dominated by daughters, that keeps winning. This season is the story of a black single mom, Cirie, her 2 lovely white daughters, and their strong but not so smart boyfriends. Cirie was key in taking out 2 fathers, Yao and Joel, and destroying the power of Jonathan. She's also the main critic of Ozzy's father pretensions. I can't really see Ozzy as a father, since he is showmancing Amanda (molesting her?) and his leadership doesn't have the smoothness of a mature leader. It is resented by the mothers, Tracy, Ami, and Cirie. Fathers, who needs them? Certainly not women who want to win Survivor for themselves.

I really hope if Ozzy makes the family reward challenge that his Mother comes out again. She was fucking HOT!
I rewatched her in that challenge and paused it for a good long time. Damn I can't wait to see her fluffy haired hotness :) |

i've really noticed the trend over the last few years towards the "single mom" style family (even
tho' these groups don't always go to the end).... a reflection I think on how our society has changed... agreed that this year is very much about Cirie
and her daughters.

I was gone last week for my birthday, and just watched last week's episode and this week's back to back. (No, FLF, I didn't get Tivo, but I did
watch it on the internet! ;) Lots of great observations, here. This is another bad FF4 season. It's very disappointing. The favorites already know the
parental figures are threatening, although I think if Jonathan had been able to stay, he might've gone very far this time. Airal is a whole bushel of kids,
with James trying to be the adult provider. They're shown in the dark, in the rain, eating rats. Reminded me of "Oliver" or a Dickens novel. Then
we've got Malakal. Single self-absorbed mom, who's not necessarily that effective for the FAMILY, but quite effective for herself. Ozzy, the eldest
son, ("Ozzy is a wonderkid") is trying to fill in for an absent father (he's said to be "in control," "a kingpin," "I
can learn from Ozzy," "Erik and Ozzie are like the Lion King--the father teaching the cub,""he does the cooking," he says, "trust
me," "maybe there's a pearl I can give your mom [Cerie]"). Amanda and Erik are following along, and I still can't get a good read on
Tracy. The others we've had trouble classifying this season are, as usual, all gone. So, according to FF4, the only one FF4 would predict in the F4 would
be Cerie. Ozzy's trying to be a father. If he makes that transition (has anyone ever done that in Survivor?), he would also be in F4. Then we've got
two kids, a son and a daughter. I agree that lately we've had a lot of fractured families on Survivor. I actually think this is a casting problem. We
haven't had strong father or mother figures in quite a while, I think. Jonathan was pretty good, but he's gone now. I wonder what Burnett did to change
things... I miss the parent figures.

I think Ozzy is trying to NOT be the father, but he just has so many good ideas about how to live in the wild that he gets pushed into the role by others (saying he's leader, etc.) |

I agree that lately we've had a lot of fractured families on Survivor. I actually think this is a casting problem.I do, too. I don't think their psychologist is as omniscient as Probst likes to tell us, but there are enough instruments, plus her own good sense, for her to do a pretty good job of picking tribes that are functional or dysfunctional. I think that MB and them have decided that dysfunction is more entertaining, so we get people with the more authoritarian styles of parents, but without the self-awareness and practical skills to support the family. And people with the irresponsibility of children, but without the winsomeness. (There's no reason MB would use this particular model of successful teams, but they should be using some model.) |

This season the median age was 32, with 10 players over, and 10 players under (5 from each tribe).
9/10 of the under 32s remain, all but Mary. 9/10 of the over 32s are gone, all but Cirie. I think she is the only married person and only parent left. Family dynamics suggest Cirie should stick around. But Parvati has an advantage should they be the main contenders facing the jury. |

Forced into an F role, maybe, by circumstances, but to me the defining characteristic of adults is their willingness to take on leadership/authority roles. Remember F Dave last season? He was like, "I run the tribe, like it or vote me out." Fs are judged on their success in challenges and at camp. |

You know, they've told us about four times that Erik is the puppy. Ozzy could still be S and have responsibility for a pet.
