Overall sales slump knocks Idols back a pegEaster week was good for the music biz, but this past week saw a substantial decline in album sales, and the Idols were by no means immune. All of the Idols on the Billboard chart are emphatically down in sales, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Jordin becomes the highest-ranking Idol on the chart, jumping from No. 29 to No. 25. That was accomplished, however, with an accompanying 28% drop in sales, less than many other neighboring albums. She sold 17,000 for a total of 612,000. Similarly, Daughtry held his/its ground at No. 27, but dropped 33% to 17,000 (actually around 500 fewer than Jordin, but rounded off they both become 17,000). His total is 3.92 million -- about 75,000 away from 4 million. Carrie's Carnival Ride drops 15-37 thanks to a 58% plunge to the mid-15,000s. Total is 1.98 million -- she's just 22,000 away from 2 million. Some Hearts falls 51-60 with a 36% drop in sales to 10,000 and a total of 6.35 million. Kellie falls 146-172, dropping 36% to 3,700 for a total of 738,000. Randy's album falls off the chart and will dealt with along with the other non-charting Idols in what follows. Randy's Idol-inclusive album sold 2,600, down from 6,500, for a three-week total of 22,000. Kelly's Breakaway sold 2,400, down from 3,500, for a total of 5.97 million. My December sold 1,000, down from 1,500, total 759,000. By special request for Michael Lopez, Thankful sold 800 and totals 2.7 million. He also asked for a couple of download totals for two of Kelly's songs -- Never Again is at 953,000, Walk Away at 922,000. Blake sold 2,000, or half of last week's 4,000, for a total of 284,000. As I mentioned, it was a tough week for sales. Bucky sold 1,200, down from 1,600, total: 333,000. Elliott sold 1,000, down from 1,500, total: 502,000. Kimberley, who appeared on the results show last week, sold 900, up from 100, for a total of 19,000. So, depending on your outlook, you can view that as a fantastic percentage increase (unrounded, it was nearly 800%) or as something like nearly 30 million saw the show and fewer than 1,000 were moved to buy her album. Her airplay/sales disconnect still seems extreme to me. Mandisa sold 500, down from 600, for a total of 75,000. Fantasia sold 400, down from 500, total 510,000. Bo sold 400, down from 500, total 43,000. Katharine sold 300, down from 400, total 369,000. Clay sold 200, same as last week, for a total of 524,000. Only three members of the 100 club this week. Taylor dropped from 200; total is 701,000. Ruben and Constantine remained constant at 100; Ruben's sold 237,000 total, Constantine 25,000. Paris slipped under the 100 mark this week and remains at 21,000. As I said, tough week. |

Idols fare middlingly on download chart
An odd week in the digital tracks realm, in which overall sales were up 7% but a big part of that was the release of two monster-selling new tracks, Mariah Carey's Touch My Body (which broke the first-week record with 286,000) and Madonna's 4 Minutes (217,000). They combined to knock Idol-by-association Leona Lewis out of No. 1 down to No. 3, although Bleeding Love sold a healthy 187,000 (down 15% from the previous week) for a total of 724,000. Jordin's No Air also felt the effect, dropping 4-5 on the chart despite a 7% gain to 137,000 for a total of 972,000. Tattoo falls 31-39, dropping 6% in sales to 32,000 for a total of 1.48 million. Carrie's All-American Girl is down 24-38 with a 10% sales drop to 33,000 and a total of 377,000. Before He Cheats, however, is up 3% to 11,000 and climbs 138-133 on the chart. Its total is 2.25 million. Daughtry continues to place four songs on the chart. Feels Like Tonight is up 53-51 and 3% in sales, to 25,000; total is 275,000. Home is also up, 152-145, with a 6% sales boost to 10,000 and a total of 1.41 million. Over You slides 140-170, dropping 11% in sales to the mid-9,000s for a total of 953,000. And It's Not Over slips 185-190, although it gains 3% to just under 9,000 for a total of 1.72 million. But there's more. Paula's Dance Like There's No Tomorrow drops 42-67, thanks to a drop of 22% to 21,000. Its total is 237,000. The David Cook Effect: Billie Jean by Chris Cornell returns to the chart at No. 100 with 15,000, more than doubling its previous total. The current total is 28,000. Not only that, but Michael Jackson's version jumps 128-103, and is up 25% to 14,000. (Total is 563,000.) The (lasting) Jason Castro Effect: Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley is still in the top 100, dropping 59-88 and suffering a 19% decline to 18,000, but still... Total is 677,000. The Michael Johns Effect: We Will Rock You by Queen, a chart perennial, is up 165-111, with a 40% increase in sales to 13,000. (Total: 1.03 million.) Not only that, We Are the Champions returns to the chart at 163 with nearly 10,000 downloads. (Total is 673,000.) The Ramiele Malubay Effect: Somehow, her fairly pathetic, illness-afflicted version of Alone brought Heart's version back to the chart at 176 with upward of 9,000 downloads. (Total: 231,000.) The Carly Smithson Effect: And Bonnie Tyler's Total Eclipse of the Heart didn't quite totally eclipse Heart, but is right behind it at 177, also with upward of 9,000 downloads. (Total: 422,000.) |

By no means I'm being disrespectful to Claudette Yamin, but does anyone think Elliott might increase CD sales because of that?

No. They might increase slightly in a few weeks since he's appearing on IGB.
I wonder if the appearance on the results show will bump sales for Bucky and Bo. |

Kimberley couldn't even sell 1,000 copies after appearing on Idol?! That's really, really sad.
Why can't the poor girl get any sales? |

Dayum I see When I See You still holding it down on the charts and it even made some billboard history on the R&B charts.
Fantasia's "When I See U" is now the 2nd longest running chart song by a female artist ever on Billboard! Last week, Fantasia surpassed Alicia Keys "If I aint Got You" which had the 2nd longest running on Billboard with 56 weeks. Thats wassup right there. |

Here's the latest Top 20 on iTunes - while searching for iterations of "American Idol". "Let It Be" and "Imagine" have just been passed by "It's All Wrong But It's All Right", "Smoky Mountain Memories" and "Little Sparrow" - which could only mean one thing: there's no way the "searches" chart can be a cumulative yearly (unless the songs just sold an amazing number this week). So we're left with 3 options: weekly, monthly or an unknown number of days. "Travellin' Thru" and "Here You Come Again" are outselling "Let It Be" and "Imagine" on the daily charts so far this week, but they are not as high as "It's All Wrong, But It's All Right", etc. So I think that if this is indeed a weekly chart, it starts on a Saturday or something, giving the hits from last week a bit more sales numbers. Let's just go with weekly from now on so the issue is over and done with. The iTunes Weekly Top 20: 1. David Cook -
Billie Jean

The OZ/Kiwi c.d. cover is waaaay better than the other one.
Her album will sell slowly but consistently I think. She is doing very well with her singles and her album is keeping very steady. Guess she won't flop like most on here hoped she would. |
