They've been progressively subtitling perfectly audible things since ASS. It's a little annoying, but oh well...

I really don't remember anyone getting subtitles unless they were whispering or there was lots of noise around them. James' subtitled confessional was
just an ordinary confessional.

I think they should always subtitle James since he's typically full of some great quips.
