GRAND ADMIRAL THRAWN(The Thrawn trilogy by Timothy Zahn, AKA "The Heir to the Empire" trilogy)
Usually when you think of Star Wars, you think of Darth Vader. Don't worry, hes on this list, as well as Darth Sidious/The Emperor. For a moment however, lets focus on the "other" great villain from Star Wars, Mitth"raw"nuruodo(but he likes to be known as Thrawn). Unlike most villains from spin off books of star wars and its ilk,Thrawn isn't a strawman villain, a catalyst in order to sell more books. And unlike most supposedly intelligent villains(Lex Luthor and Brianiac from Superman comics, and Blofeld from James Bond movies just to name three), Thrawn doesn't make idiotic decisions to serve the plot formula. For the most part, hes 5 steps ahead of everyone. The Heir to the Empire trilogy is among the best of the Star Wars books and comics, and while that isn't saying much considering how much junk is out, I give it my heartfelt recomendation. They definatly live up to the original trilogy. As for Thrawn, he has to go up a against Luke Skywalker, the greatest Jedi of all time, so of course hes going to lose, but let me say this, if Thrawn were Force sensitive,he probably pwn Vader and Palpatine, hes THAT good. www.starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Thrawn

PATRICK BATEMAN(American Psycho)
I was only three years old when this book came out, so I missed the outrage, but its justified. Forget the movie.Although Christian Bale played the character he was given well, the screenplay and direction were emasculated, of course, because it was directed by a woman. Not that Mary Harron is a bad director or anything. I really enjoyed "I shot Andy Warhol". Shes a competent director, but she didn't direct the real American Psycho. She couldn't. Probably hardly anyone could and get it to its full effect, cause this is a really fucked up text. Everything you've heard about it is true-it really is as disgusting and repulsive as critics have said it is. It has some of the most graphic depictions of torture and murder this side of real life. The women Patrick Bateman murders are given extra attention, because hes a master of the universe chauvinist, and a prototypical ugly ameican/yuppy. Not to say that its all realistic, because the title character really is a psycho, and he claims to see things which either don't exist or are absurd(like an ATM machine telling him to feed it cats, or a bench following him home).Perosnally, I believe all the murders were real, theres no reason to believe they aren't. In the books universe, the people are so vapid as to really not notice the smells of a course coming from his apartment room. The book is badly written, but thats the point, all of the characters are either vapid, stupid, hypocritical, or a combination of the above. It is written like the main characters act and think, and in that way its brilliant. It gets savaged regularly by critics, but I don't think that they see that the two diensional characteriztions and lack of motivation or insight into the main character is apart of the satirical message about how bad crass hedonism, nihilism and commercialism can be. Its all highly exaggeraed, but so is Brave New World and other pieces of art. Its called trangressive fiction. The author,Bret Ellis, I think is a talented writer. Glamorama is hilarious and in the same vein as AP, and just as brilliant. Less then Zero was pretty good, even if it was partly plagiarized from Joan Didion. The film version was OK, but it was a heavy handed antidrug movie, and had nothing to do with the book. I heard Quentin Tarantino is going to do a remake, with an emphasis of following the novel, sounds exciting(well, not the story. Its boring, but its very well written) |

BIG BROTHER, OR THE GOVERNMENT IN GENERAL(1984,Brave New World, dozens of other books, films, musical pieces, historical documents, academic analysis, journalistic
pieces,etc)
Now I know theres alot of liberals around these parts, and thats perfectly fine. I think only the most insane or deluded people actually want the government intruding into their personal lives for any other reason then pragmatism. I consider myself a libertarian, as in, I want the least possible amount of government interference in all aspects of life, don't we all? I strongly defend Ludwig von mises, Milton Friedman, etc, but I do respect liberal arguments when they actually bring about a good argument. Unlike a growing number of people, I don't see FDRs new deal as a corrupting influence(although I do see fdr as a despot). And I absolutly despise most so called conservatives today(well, i dislike politicians in general). Anyway, this isn't about me,its about why the government has been portreyed as evil. Because it is.lol. Think about it,do you really want out of touch strangers breathing down your neck? Being arrested for a "thought crime"? Unless your a damn Nazi or a retard, no. Its a scary thought that you have no control over your financial or personal life. Of course, I may be simplifying matters, but I'm not. I'm not going to try and and look at every trannical regime throughout history and fiction, beause theres such a wealth of it.Humans are no hive creatures, we are individualistic by nature, so I can't think of anything scarier then the faceless entity of Big Brother |

I'll get around to both, but first one of my favorites
HANS GRUBER(Die Hard) Its almost a universally accepted fact that Die Hard is the best action movie ever made. Why? In addition to a better then average plot, good pacing, direction and pyrotechnics, but most importently because of the actors. Bruce Willis is actually a pretty good actor, and while his character doesn't have much depth, he invests as much as he can into John McClane as he can. Hes a smart ass cop(like I haven't seen that before) whos visiting his wife in Los Angeles on Christmas Eve. She wants little to do with him, but he wants to be with her and his kid. He actually plays John pretty sympathically in these secenes, and we like him. Eventually the Nakatomi buliding(where his wife Bonnie Bedelia works) is taken hostage by German terrorists. Actually their not really terrorists, because they don't have a cause. What they really want is the money in the vault, but its a time consuming process since the president of the company doesn't have the access code. They try to break the encryption while holding everyone hostage. Meanwhile, Bruce Willis is taking a leak but eventually finds out whats going on and decides the dispatch the thugs. So I've already told you the basics of the plot, but why this movie is so awesome is because of its characters. Hans Gruber is on this list because he epitimizes cool. Hes played by Alan Rickman, who always brings class and a sense of authority to any role he plays. Hes well dressed, well spoken and totally ruthless. Theres one murder scene thats totally sudden(though expected) that demonstrates how gangsta(ugh at that word) he really is. And hes smart too, he doesn't make any stupid mistakes for the convience of the plot. John McClane has to take Hans down with actual skill and smarts and he can't afford to expect him to make a mistake. Hans Gruber is one of my favorite villains because of his line after line of quotable dialogue, charisma, and utter ruthlessness |

What about Ganondorf from Ocarina of Time? In my mind, he's one of the most efficient and successful video game villains I've ever seen.

I never heard of him, but I'll play the game if I can find it(can I?) and write up a review. I'm probably going to do a comic book villain next

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for the N64, Gamecube, and Wii Virtual Console. It's currently the highest rated game of all time. I doubt finding
it will be a problem.

What can I say, I'm not a huge fan of video games. I play them alot, but mostly for a few hours of mindless entertainment, and usually don't follow the
storys. The only game I ever REALLY got into was Knights of the Old Republic and the sequel

ONSLAUGHT(Marvel Universe)
Batman is by far my favorite superhero, and I thought of paying homage to him by paying homage to his arguably greatest foe,the Joker(you could say Darkseid really is, but hes just another supernatural megalomaniac imo). Infact, when i was thinking about the Joker, I thought I might do a team write up of him and Freddy Krueger, because they are both characters that represent total chaos, cruelty, nihilism, etc. To truly understand the barbarity of the Joker, read "The Killing Joke" by Alan Moore. But that wouldn't work I thought. Galactus is probably the most powerful character in comics, but I think the duex ex machinas involved in his perpetual defeats are ridiculous, so I turned to the next most powerful character,Onslaught. For anyone who knows a little about the Marvel Universe, yhis might meet with some sceptiscism. Aside from the aforementioned Galactus and Darkseid, Dark Phoenix should be given her due as one of the most powerful entities ever. But I think Onslaught deserves mention above all else because he has the best track record. He killed many major superheros like The Hulk and Ironman and it took practically the entire Marvel Universe to stop him. A true supervillain amongst supervillains |
