I too am kind of tired of the discussion, just because there's no garauntee that whoever was supposed to be in the coffin is even going to end up being the person in the coffin. Other than the newspaper clipping, was there anything else indicating that it was a man in the coffin? |

So who pays for the funeral? The county doesn't just randomly hold viewings for beating victims with no family. If the man was from NY, why was there a service in LA? |

After the last episode, I had the crazy thought that Juliet is the corpse. Don't ask me why, though.

I doubt it's Sayid or Ben, only because I'm guessing that Jack's insistance to return to the Island will make him a "risk" that Ben will
have to assign Sayid to for elimination.

I don't think it would be Juliet just for the reason that surely her sister would come to her funeral. They seem to have been very close. I think Sayid is
a good bet, but we supposed to find out who it is by the end of this season. The writers did say that they'd tell us!

Jack was attending his own funeral via time travel

Not sure if this has been theorized anywhere else, but my guess is that it's Sayid's funeral, but the coffin is actually empty.
It being Sayid's funeral, as discussed, would make sense since he doesn't have close family, is definitely someone that gets off the island, and the rest of the losties definitely have a reason to want to avoid him with his new identity. Why else would Ben say it was good that Sayid's identity is now known, as if it was better than the current situation? If he faked his death, then taking someone out would be even MORE unexpected. |

Since we're not excluding any reasonable hypothesis, how about Faraday?
His brains are already scrambled from radiation, and leaving the island could start him on a downward suicide spiral like our ladyfriend who exited the ship, stage left. On second thought, I think I'll call it a night now. |

Has anyone considered it could be Claire in the casket?
Jack went to the visitation and is very distraught because at that point he's learned Claire was his half sister. She has no other family to attend (parents are dead), presumably no friends in the US, and there could be any number of reasons why none of the other "survivors" attend.....Hurley is in the psych ward, Sun is too pregnant to travel, Sayid is busy doing whatever he does for Ben, and Kate is raising Aaron as her own and is bitter about whatever the circumstances were that resulted in Aaron being with her. This also ties into Jack not wanting to go to Kate's house to see the baby. He's torn up about whatever went down with Claire. Claire's death leaves him incredibly distraught. He feels responsible for what ensued and now reasons that they were not supposed to leave the island. When asked at the visitation if he is family or a friend he replies "neither" or possibley "either". Either would fit, and neither could refer to a sort of ambiguous relationship.....because he didn't know until recently that she was his sister. My two cents....we'll see! :) |

WiscBadger95 wrote: OK. And.....? Like I said there could be a multitude of reasons why none of the survivors were at the funeral. We only know snippits of what happens between the rescue and the funeral. Desmond had a vision of Claire and Aaron on a helicopter. So, one could assume Claire leaves the island with Aaron. Actually, I've been thinking that the 6th of the Oceanic 6 is Claire/the person in the casket. There's been some debate about whether the 6th is Aaron or not. I assumed it was but now I'm not so sure. I think it's plausible. Prove me wrong. :) |
