The rise of unscrupulous players who don't give a crap about game integrity changes the dynamics of gameplay and strategy as the first power shifts appear, as do the first twists in the form of tribal switches. The First Interlude: Thailand Some twists but no game shifts. No big characters or strategy that create interest or buzz, and the show runs on fumes for a season. Generally derided as boring and bad by fans. The First Renewal: Amazon-Pearl Islands. Gameplay is revolutionized by players like Cesternino and Fairplay/The Outcasts, who flip from alliance to alliance multiple times. The gender split appears for the first time. MB's creation of a character that is hugely compelling to the main audience renews buzz and interest, combined with the perfect villain in Fairplay. Ratings are the best since the Golden Age( I think ). All Stars: The format keeps the buzz going, but the season is a dissapointment, with big stars like Hatch/Cesternino/Colby going home early. Seen as a dividing line by many fans. The Second Interlude: Vanuatu The producers return to the gender division and cast players who the producers hope will cause a gender war. This backfires when the season turns into a straight pagonging, which bores many viewers. Though a powershift does happen, neither the gameplay nor the characters can generate buzz. The season is generally viewed as a dissapointment. Many fans believe that after this season Jeff Probst's quality as host begins to decline. The Reign of Lagrossa: Palau-Guatemala After the boring and dissapointing Vanuatu, the producers go for broke by casting 20 people and having many " Firsts. " The producers succeed in making Stephenie Lagrossa a huge star, who, along with other fan favorites like Tom and Bobby Jon, propel the season to the best ratings Post-ASS. The producers bring back Steph and BJ for Guatemala, and dominates the Guatemala season. Winner Danni is viewed as forgettable. There are some twists, most notably the introduction of the HII for the first time. Mactors(mostly from California, while always a presence on the show, become much more numerous and while some such as Bobby Jon and Jamie prove to be compelling characters, others are colorless duds good for little more than eye candy. The Third Interlude: Exile Island. Yet another interlude within eras, with the first half being mostly character driven by the dysfunctional Casaya and the main big characters of Cirie and Shane. The second half still features Cirie and Shane prominently, but Aras becomes more prominent as his rivalry with Terry becomes a main plot point. For the first time the HII takes center stage. Terry is more prominent in the second half, but the season still delivers a forgettable winner in Aras. The Race/Class Period: More minorities are casted and in an attempt to provoke controversy the season divides tribes by race. Contestants are now overwhelmingly Californians and in many cases mactors. Twice more the HII is very prominent in both seasons, and twists appear in record numbers and drive the season more than characters in some ways. Cook Islands is well-liked by the main audience(but not by Sucksters), but Fiji is viewed as very dissapointing, as producers follow up race with class and it backfires spectacularly. Featured a compelling hero in Yau with a good foil in Dreamz, but not much else impressive. The New Beginning: China scales back the focus on twists, focusing instead on location and character development. The HII is still prominent for a while, but not as much as before. Is viewed as a new beginning for the series. As for Fans v. Favorites, the format should generate interest and the series seems to have been heavily promoted, so who knows?
