I think the numbers that we are currently seeing are die-hard Lost fans...ones that will now stick with it to the very end. There are rumors (Ausiello) that Lost will be on tuesday nights and will jump forward at least an hour, because they recognize that Lost at one time was a family watched show. BTW Sofa King....Jericho is also one of my favorites...and I'm crossing my fingers for it to be renewed. CBS often in my opinion cuts shows too fast. I'm thankful they gave it a season...but they MUST realize Jericho's timeslot against AI is a killer. Even then I feel it pulls good numbers. Serialized shows have a tougher row to hoe. They have to have fans willing to invest their time weekly. Also...Jericho...like Lost is learning cutting up the season doesn't work well with serials. Hopfully next year...CBS will play the entire second season back to back episodes...like Lost is going to do. Even Heroes numbers are dwindling....breaks don't work with serials.

But...notice Lost will not give up it's #2 in adults 18-49. In fact this ep actually went up in all over viewership from last weeks. and by old...I mean people older then me<g>...because I'm in my early 50's...and I don't hardly watch any of old CBS's shows. not to mention I'm super ticked at them now that they killed one of their few good shows...Jericho. Guess it was much too young for them.

Peg, I shocked you don't know that The Price Is Right is huge mostly with the college set these days. It's not your grandma's show anymore. Not to mention that last night was the last million dollar prime time extravaganza that will be hosted by Bob Barker. He's turned into a rock star.

My Mother-in-law (who passed away at 91) loved that show...and Bob. I think she had a thing for him like we have for Locke<g>. But what you said made me curious to see how it did do in that age category: Price Is Right Million Dollar Spectacular (households: 9.0/16, #2; adults 18-49: 3.5, #5 ) not really that impressive.

I guess primetime wasn't such a good way to show their numbers. I remember my grandma watching it religiously every day as she ironed. Once I retired, I tuned in to see all these kids on acting like Bob Barker was Elvis. I was stunned. Now I'm hooked myself. I love to see how excited everyone gets when they win lovely Broyhill furniture.

That two/three generations of people were tuning in to see it doesn't surprise me AT ALL. Again, the audience for LOST is settled in. Our numbers are not gonna go up or down that much. Now, whether or not that holds true come February is something we can't know till February. Is the 95% of "casual" viewership for LOST gonna come back in February? Or will they have found another show, or even A LIFE, during the 8 month hiatus? We don't know. And no media pundit or LOST honcho or ABC exec knows--no matter what they SAY between now and February. Only when the numbers come in the day after the season opener will we know. Meanwhile, don't be surprised if the numbers viewing the finale don't differ all that much from the numbers viewing over the last few weeks. We are a set audience. And people can't just tune in LOST to "see what happens" like with other TV dramas. They'll have missed too much. So I'm not expecting much from the Nielsens next week. Neither should you.

I think more people are watching TV in the fall because many casual viewers tune it to check out the new shows and such. It gets darker earlier which gives peeps more time to eat dinner, settle down etc. and they can advertise ALL SUMMER and generate buzz.

BUT...that is where they run into trouble. They can't do it in the fall...because they can't get 16 shows produced fast enough to be able to show them consecutively, which they've learned is critical for ratings and viewer happiness<g>.

Posts: 3168 (05/27/07 12:10 AM) Registered User Reply Quote More Recent Posts Message Connection Block Invite	i'm watching the "save jericho" thing going on in another forum. this whole idea of 23 eps in a season to cover 39 weeks (or whatever a tv year is.) and that idea in the new world of tivo, and web viewers, and iWhatever downloads, and dvd only folks... this idea of the supreme relevance of the neilsen numbers anymore is fascinating. the "old media" idea of the nuclear family sitting in front of the tv at some network appointed hour to watch when they say we should (or even ever seeing their commercials) is just so wrong now. (the latest travesty is adding 100 or so college students to their mix and extrapolating these viewers to represent over a million other "college" viewers to the numbers. those little fucks are probably too high or too busy getting laid to change the channel. but all tv gets judged by this.) people are changing how they approach tv. networks avail us with so many viewing options and then ignore all of these options except the old school "neilsen numbers" thing. the networks are stuck in the 1960's. and the viewers of many fine tv shows get fucked. lost has enough "old school" numbers to weather the storm. but these network idiots have to wake up to the new world. or not, sofa is just rambling...

They are still reliant on commercials. DVR/TiVo viewings generate no revenue for the network. DVDs generate revenue for the producers, who are often not the same entity as the network, and the amount is not enough to produce the show. iTunes is still really small. Web viewings generate only a tiny fraction of the ad revenue of television. Until they can figure out a new way to get either companies or consumers to pay for the programming they watch, the ratings are all that matters. You see some sponsorship, like Nissan in Heroes, but it's very clunky and obvious. Lost costs a lot of money and it doesn't do well in repeats. So if, at some point in the next three years, it can't generate enough revenue from ads for its initial airing, ABC won't continue to run it.

They'll just bury it in some doomed-already timeslot (a Friday or Saturday night, perhaps) and let it run out its remaining eppys. IF it fizzles during these last three seasons. More specifically, IF the audience doesn't come back in February. No one will truly know until February--though I'm cautiously optimistic. Hopefully, they go into February letting it stay on Wednesdays. And the numbers stay roughly where they were these past few months. Those are outstanding numbers for the 10/9 Central slot, in ABC's eyes. That would be all the network execs would need to be happy. If they move it up to 9/8 Central on Wednesdays (which will only happen if Private Practice completely flops, not an impossibility), they can blame any audience loss on AI. As they'll probably fear the loss of audience--until the numbers reassure them--the move might make logistical sense. Something acceptably tangible to blame audience defections on! And if it's 2nd to Idol in the numbers for that hour (very likely), that justifies the move. They'd tell advertisers, "Hey, anyone not watching AI is probably watching LOST, so you get the majority of all TV viewers in that hour!" So staying on Wednesdays will probably work out for LOST. ABC already has the win-win spin for that night worked out!

'Lost' Finds Big Audience Thursday February 1, 2008 Fast National ratings for Thursday, Jan. 31, 2008 The return of "Lost" led ABC to a ratings win Thursday, in the process helping "Eli Stone" get off to a decent start. ABC averaged an 8.3 rating/13 share for the night. CBS finished second at 6.9/11, beating out FOX's 6.2/9. NBC, 4.5/7, took fourth. The CW trailed with a 2.1/3. ABC's lead was wider in the adults 18-49 demographic, where it earned a 5.3 rating. FOX came in second with a 3.2, followed by NBC at 2.8. CBS' 2.4 was good for fourth, and The CW drew a 1.4. A "Lost" clip show posted an 8.0/12 for ABC at 8 p.m., setting the tone for the night. "Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?," 6.4/10, put FOX in second, ahead of a "CSI: NY" rerun, 5.8/9, on CBS. NBC went with repeats of "My Name Is Earl" and "The Office" to finish fourth. "Smallville" posted a 2.4/4 for The CW.
