January polls are historically poor predictors of November outcomes. IIRC, Howard Dean was whuppin' Dubya about this time in 2004. How'd that one turn out, again??
One of my theories is that after McLame gets the nomination, the first head-to-head poll against the Dem nominee will suddenly show him 5-10 points behind the Dems. The pundits will cite "convention bounce", no doubt.
