They should definately go to Finland again, and especially to Lapland. It is magical during winter time!

Re: | ||

It certainly is. The packet that I sent Phil, Van Munster, Doganieri, et al, featured many pix from my trip to Finnish lapland. I also suggested a reindeer-oriented challenge. I was surprised that the only trip that they've taken so far included an odd challenge about going underground into a mine. That's nothing characteristic about Finland, a true trip to that gem of the north should feature far more unique challenges, such as one with reindeer or one about harvesting local berries that grow only there, nowhere else in the world. The challenge about the work that Finnish Olympic athletes go through was significant to that country, true, but I felt that the show wimped out on showing what a unique place Finland really is.

Where in Lapland were you Dan? We have been to most parts of the country and finnish is one of the many languages we speak. And you are correct with that whole mine thing. We couldn't believe it when we saw it... And Lohja is just a miserable town!

Hiya Mirna & Charla Schmirna!
I was in Inari and Ivalo. We had dinner at this reindeer farm and, if you like, I can even e-mail you a picture of my almost finished reindeer meal, that Rudolph was delicious! Finland is by far my most favorite European country, and I've been to every region there aside from the west coast, which I hear is about the dullest part, although I hear that there are some nice university towns there. Have you been to the Savonlinna Castle, that castle that they use now as an opera house, in the town of Olavinlinna? That would be an EXCELLENT place for a pitstop, don't you think so? RSD :) Kiitos! |

Re: | ||

Yest it would be a great pit stop and amazingly we have been there, but there is an older (we think) castle in Turku which is the old capital of Finland. Turku is in the west coast...

Re: | ||

Yup, the castle in Turku is the oldest, Turku is Finland's oldest town. That castle was used during WWII as a POW Prison. I visited there, as well as had some pretty good pizza while in town! (Don't believe those accounts about how there is no pizza in Norway, Sweden or Finland!)
What TAR failed to show in their Finland leg was the incredibly beautiful architecture that the Finns are so well known for in all of the major towns. It was, indeed, quite ridiculous that they wasted their time in a boring town like Lohja, a town in which I haven't visited. I liked it when Kimberly referred to Lohja as "La Jolla," I guess everything's California to her. |

Isn't it time for TAR to visit Cambodia and the Angkor Wat? It would be an especially good place for a pit stop as the racers would have to run a fair amount to find Phil.

Finland would be a great place to visit again. They could do that reindeer racing thing Phil did and a "wife carrying" task would be perfect for a
Fast Forward.
About that Vatican City Fast Forward: I believe they were actually tasked to find the keyhole at the Villa Malta (in Rome) which has a view of St. Peter's Basilica (in Vatican City). |

They should visit more islands in the Pacific or Indian Ocean... Easter Island (Chile) would be good. Vanuatu, Fiji, Seychelles, Maldives...
How come not so many islands have been visited in the race before? I suppose there would be a limit to the tasks they could do, but even so it would make a nice change of scenery... I also would like to see more Middle Eastern countries visited. Okay not Iraq or Afganistan.... but at least more of UAE, Bahrain or Petra in Jordan? |

I think the reason they haven't visited a lot of those island states is similar to why they won't go to Antarctica - they're not that easy to get
to on short notice. The race would be forced to become a tour group in many cases. That was what surprised me so much about them going to Mauritius and
Madagascar. It's a bitch finding flights to those places from just about anywhere.
I'd really like to see them go to Baku and Gobustan in Azerbaijan, and Bhutan. Maybe some places in Northern India, or just something other than the tired, congested urban centers/slums we get all the time. They could go to India every year and give us something interesting other than people commenting on how poor the people are and how bad it smells. |
