Anti, it's rare that I disagree with you:
But in this case - the device of trying to leave manhattan was very strong, very, very strong - up until the Bridge incident. One of the characters even suggested the Lincoln Tunnel, when escaping was still at the top of the agenda. The entire 'gotta get me a cellphone' stage, when he's like, "I have to help her" and everybody was saying that he's crazy...and then, all of a sudden, everybody folds up their opposition and they go?!??! The 'turn' simply wasn't believable. When you consider the probability spreads...of her being in a place unable to move, and with those types of events going down...it was far more probable that she was dead. There's something universal about the sense of self-preservation. This was the strongest and more believable theme. The entire "they were friends, they had a one night stand, they didn't talk for a month, he's going to Japan, they had a fight" line, in itself, wasn't consistent with the subsequent events. |

He wasn't trying to get a cellphone! He was getting a battery for his phone b/c she called him WHILE they were on the bridge, trying to escape, and he could tell that she was hurt and needed him. |

Lol at the details.

Lol at the details. But isnt that exactly what the naysayers are complaining about? No details and unexplainable behavior? That's not what happened. |

When it was clear they were not going to keep Rob from going back, they stuck with him. If I were one of them, I'd be calling him crazy, calling it a
fool's errand, a longshot, and begging him to leave the island, and when he kept walking back into it, I'd say "fuck...Jesus help us all" and
follow him. He's my friend. It's a stupid thing to do, but it's a human thing to do. The vast majority of people would do what his friend did. The
vast majority of people would do what Rob did. I dunno how else to explain it.

Anti - people here can't relate to what happened since they have no RL friends.

I didn't see the movie but who the hell knows how people would react in this kind of situation. I do know that my brother worked up in a school in the
Bronx on 9/11 and the boyfriend of one of his co-workers walked from his job in the world financial center to the school in the Bronx to get to her that day.
No telling what crazy things people will or won't do when shit is falling down all around them and they want to be with a loved one.

I like how they were able to get a helicopter out of Manhattan anytime they wanted, since no one else on the island wanted to get off.
Oh, and that might have been a spoiler. |

izad, yes on both counts. ;)
Merk - the military officers said that they had evacuated most of the people - BUT that if the group wanted to go looking for his friend, they would still be able to get out of Manhattan if they were at the helipad at that specific time. It was all planned beforehand. |

I don't think it was supposed to be a treatise on what is "rational" behavior. I think they were trying to capture the idea that when things are
chaotic and terrifying, people will do crazy things or brave things to save other people or both. When things are falling apart, people react out of shock and
fear. It's the fight or flight thing kicking in. At least that's what I thought they were mostly trying to get across...not so much the details of what
the characters did or didn't do. I think too many people maybe went in watching this movie using their "Lost" anal-retentiveness that it was
going to be about secret clues somewhere in the plot.

Merk - the military officers said that they had evacuated most of the peopleSo 8 million people were evacuated in a matter of hours? Um....there are other bridges that they could've crossed - and copters that left. For all we know, the other bridges were crammed full of people leaving. Or they were all at an orgy - WE DON'T KNOW because this movie was about a specific group of people - not the populace of Manhattan.

"Only" about 1.5 million people are in Manhattan itself. Some percentage of that would have been killed, more would be hiding, and the military
personnel on the ground didn't seem to have a perfect grasp of the situation anyway.
