15. Episode 106…Udder Revenge July 5, 2000 Both tribes prepped for the upcoming merge, but when it came to post-merge strategy, Pagong found themselves in disagreement with one another: while most of the tribe hoped to stick together, Gretchen felt that the game didn't need to be played with alliances. Meanwhile, Gervase upset the women of the tribe when he compares their intelligence to that of a cow's. On thin ice as the tribe heads to Tribal Council, Gervase remarked that while he made the comment, "Joel lives and breathes it." The women of Pagong agree and Joel becomes the sixth person voted out of the game. Quote: "All right, who did it? Who did it? Who counted that chicken before it hatched? Who counted the chickens?" - Greg Buis Why it made the top 20: This is the first truly amazing episode of Survivor, but unfortunately it's also one of the greatest "What if?" episodes ever because had Pagong booted anyone else (particularly Gretchen), the entire season would've played out completely differently. Joel was Pagong's great strategic hope, and unfortunately, he laughed a little too hard at a sexist joke Gervase made. Now I'll definitely admit that Joel made some comments to the women that did seem a little condescending, but it was Gervase that made the comment and it was pretty obvious that the editors were taking some scenes out of context to justify Joel going home. Even so, the battle of the sexes dynamic was fun to watch (especially compared to the way it was hyped up in the Tagi politics, with Sue always 'teaming up' with the women but voting with the men). And I love the reward challenge; I really get into it while watching and I can't blame Kelly for attempting to keep going despite Pagong's win (even so, I still laugh at her for it). Tearin' Down the Wall: At Tribal Council, one contestant breaks the fourth wall by telling Gervase that the editors will show his cows comment right after he jokingly denied it. Who was it?
14. Episode 307…Will There Be a Feast Tonight? November 22, 2001 The two tribes merged into Moto Maji, and the ten players competed in a test of endurance for immunity. It came down to Clarence and Teresa. In a game of rock-paper-scissors, Teresa won the first individual immunity challenge. Meanwhile, while the rest of the tribe got to know each other, the anti-social Frank went off by himself. Teresa promised Clarence that she wouldn't vote for him, while Lex straight up told Clarence that he was going. Teresa's vote ended up going towards Lex, and Clarence voted the same way. The other eight, however, all decided that Clarence was too much of a threat to continue playing. Quote: "Can I just say that? I am so glad that Lindsey is gone!" - Brandon Quinton Why it made the top 20: Fun fact: This is the last episode of the show that I ever watched for the first time with a family member (it was my aunt on Thanksgiving night). But that's not why I love it. It's just a friggin' good merge episode. It was the first time that the players didn't know about when the merge would be in advance, and especially with the tribal switch two episodes earlier, all they could do was speculate. You could probably argue that it was the first time the contestants were truly paranoid about anything in the game. The challenge here takes up a lot of time but it makes sense being endurance, and after more than six hours it all comes down to a crucial rock-paper-scissors competition. But the star of this episode is of course Frank, who spends his time trying to communicate with elephants and not breaking the honor of handshakes. Trivia: Who was the first person out at the immunity challenge?
13. Episode 1410…It's a Turtle?! April 19, 2007 Mookie berated Dreamz for helping to vote out Michelle at the previous Tribal Council. After winning the reward challenge, Cassandra selected Boo, Dreamz, and Yau-man to join her on a yacht to strengthen her alliance. But when Earl finds Dreamz strategizing with Alex, Dreamz attempts to soothe their doubts about him by revealing that Mookie had a hidden immunity idol. Yau-man defied expectations when he won the first individual immunity challenge. Intense plotting took over the camp before Tribal Council, with the Four Horsemen convinced that Stacy was with them and that Earl had a hidden idol, they planned on blindsiding him. But when they realize that they may not necessarily have Stacy on their side, they decide to switch their votes to Cassandra, the glue in the probable majority alliance, and Mookie gives Alex the idol thinking that he was on the chopping block and this move would give them the numbers. Dreamz told the opposing alliance about this, and they decided to switch the vote to Mookie, before deciding that it's best to play it safe, and vote Edgardo instead. At Tribal Council, a confident Alex played the hidden idol before the votes were read, as he, Edgardo, and Mookie got cocky and smirked in celebration of Alex's security. But their smug glee quickly turned into stunned desperation when it turned out that Alex didn't get a single vote, and Edgardo found himself voted out. Quote: "What's going on now is totally chaos. The panic button has been pushed." - Earl Cole, in the understatement of the year Why it made the top 20: I think the avatar revolution after this episode aired speaks for itself. They aired promos that literally boasted of the enormously positive online response to it, and even though the rest of the season couldn't live up to its greatness, I think for a lot of people this episode single-handedly made Fiji worthwhile. This was another one of those "anatomy of a blindside" episodes and it couldn't have played out more perfectly. The cameramen who got those Alex and Edgardo reaction shots deserve raises. Sucks to Be Edgardo and Alex: Who started the "avatar revolution" thread at Sucks?
12. Episode 413…A Tale of Two Cities May 16, 2002 With the Rotu 4 all gone, there were obviously two different pairs of two (Neleh and Paschal, and Vecepia and Sean), with Kathy in the middle. Both sides were trying to use her as the swing vote. When Kathy won immunity, her vote became even more powerful. In what is perhaps the tensest Tribal Council ever, Sean fought hard to convince Kathy to keep him around. Unfortunately for him, Kathy stuck with Paschal and Neleh, and Sean was voted off. Quote: "[Kathy's] from Vermont. I'm from Georgia. And Sean's from Harlem. This thing runs deeper than a game." - Paschal English Why it made the top 20: This episode just blows me away. You need to smoke a cigarette after watching that Tribal Council. Cook Islands may have been the "battle of the races" season but it was guilty of sweeping issues under the rug far too often. This episode isn't really the most comfortable to watch, but it's incredibly compelling from start to finish. It culminates in the single greatest Tribal Council ever, where Sean pleaded his case for Kathy to give him immunity in the midst of a shouting match between all five remaining players (especially Paschal and Sean)-this moment alone makes the generally useless twist of allowing immunity to be given away worthwhile. So That Must Be Why Kathy Voted for Sean: How sick did Neleh claim she would if the final three was Kathy, Sean, and Vee?
11. Episode 107…The Merger July 12, 2000 Jenna and Sean are chosen to be representatives for their tribe; visiting the opposing tribe's camp, then coming together to discuss the merged tribe over a feast. They chose to utilize Tagi Beach, and the new tribe was called Rattana. While Sean is away, the rest of Tagi solidifies their alliance, and set up a boot order for the Pagong players. The first individual immunity challenge is a breath-holding competition. Greg wins, and at Tribal Council, Tagi's alliance rears its head when a shocked Gretchen is sent home. Quote: "I don't know, Rudy kicked me in the head, like, three times last night, and I said, 'Rudy, that's my head,' and he said, 'Well, this is my space.'" - Gretchen Cordy Why it made the top 20: You know, I have mixed feelings on this episode. The great parts are extraordinary, and if the episode consisted entirely of footage from the new Rattana tribe, it would undoubtedly be in the top five. I could even deal with a few minutes of Jenna and Sean exploring the other tribe's camps. But sitting through their summit is a bit of a chore to be honest and it really slows the episode down. And as much as I love the cheesy summer camp-feel of Borneo's challenges…holding your breath? Really? But neither of those are bad enough to detract from the great scenes of the newly merged tribe and of course the most shocking Tribal Council of all time. Match Game: We all know the four people who voted for Gretchen, but what about the other six? Match them to who they
voted against. You need to have all of them right to get credit.

CR, CL, PL - all correct! Unfortunately I can only give credit for one response per person per round so I'll give it for the first one you each answered.
But J is for Jenna might be my number one episode of all-time. No, there's no surprise or switch, but it is expertly constructed, and tense right up until the end. It's how every post merge episode should be done. Not gonna give anything away but...interesting choice. ;) The top ten begins...now!
10. Episode 207…The Merge March 8, 2001 With the Ogakor tribe still unaware of what exactly happened to a Kucha tribe member, they got an opportunity to get information when the women of Kucha went over to Ogakor's camp, and the men of Ogakor headed over to Kucha. After getting to know each other, the men and women headed over to a new location, merging under the new tribe name, Barramundi. In the endurance-based immunity challenge, Tina stepped down so that Keith, her former Ogakor tribemate who had past votes, could win immunity. At Tribal Council, with the obvious Ogakor target immune, Kucha decided to vote for Colby, with Ogakor all voting for Jeff, who they knew had a prior vote cast against him. After the tie was declared deadlocked, Jeff's previous votes sent him out of the game. Quote: "Rodger, I'm real sorry, bro. I didn't even bring a skirt with me so I can't do anything for you." - Colby Donaldson, upon learning that Kucha was expecting Ogakor's women to come over Why it made the top 10: This episode's excellent because it perfectly mixes fun, character-based scenes with interesting strategy ones. I love the gender separation right before the merge; it made for some great moments (the women discussing different-flavored Tootsie Rolls; the men of Kucha being convinced that they were going to wine and dine the women of Ogakor and Colby's above quote). But the bonding was peppered with some careful strategy, particularly on Ogakor's part, and although Kucha was probably the stronger and more likable tribe, this episode really proves how Ogakor had their heads on straight and deserved to control things post-merge. The immunity challenge is fantastic; even though the end result is pretty much set in stone once Jeff jumps off. But although we know how it's gonna go down, the tie is still a great moment that decides the game once and for all. Trivia: Who was the last Kucha member standing in the immunity challenge?
9. Episode 202…Suspicion February 1, 2001 The morning after Kucha voted off Debb, they woke up to find that Mike began cooking rice, annoying the tribe since they hadn't all agreed on it. When the tribes got Tree Mail, Rodger began to panic because he was a very novice swimmer and afraid of heights. The challenge involved jumping into the rapids, and when it was Rodger's turn, he inspired his team by making the jump. Despite all his efforts, Kucha still lost the reward challenge. But all was not well at Ogakor either. When Kel was off taking a walk, Jerri told the tribe that she thought he had been eating beef jerky. She, Tina, and Amber searched through his bag, upsetting Maralyn. The immunity challenge made the contestants have a taste of some Australian delicacies (although four lucky players got either a candy bar or an apple slice). Vegetarian Kimmi refused to eat cow brain, setting Kucha back. But Tina was unable to keep down her tripe, and it went into a tiebreaker where one member from each tribe had to consume a worm. Kimmi managed to get it down before Tina, sending Ogakor to Tribal Council, where Kel's antisocial nature caught up with him, and he was voted off. Quote: "I can eat a worm! I can eat a worm!" - Kimmi Kappenberg Why it made the top 10: It's hard to imagine this episode being any more perfect. It has two excellent challenges, some beef jerky drama, Kucha getting upset with Mike, and Mad Dog channeling Sue Hawk-what more could you ask for? I've always liked this episode but it wasn't until my most recent viewing a few months ago that I really realized how fantastic it is. Rodger at Butch Cassidy is a great moment, and I always thought it was neat that they had some non-gross food at the challenge for some reason. The beef jerky stuff was great too, although it's one of the big reasons I've never really been a Tina fan, because she was just as bad as Jerri was here but acted all holier-than-thou at the final TC about it. But yeah, this is just a really awesome episode. Match Game: Match the Kucha contestant with the Ogakor contestant they faced off against in the immunity challenge. You
need to get all of them right to get credit.
Amber
8. Episode 805…I've Been Bamboozled! February 26, 2004 For the reward challenge, the players had to build a raft. When they got to the challenge, a twist was revealed: the tribe that finished the challenge last would be dissolved into the other two tribes. Saboga lost, and Mogo Mogo gained Ethan and Jerri, while Chapera picked up Jenna L. and Rupert. At the immunity challenge, a naked Rich rubbed against Sue. Chapera won, forcing Mogo Mogo to attend their first Tribal Council, where Richard Hatch, the first Survivor winner, was voted off. Quote: "You knew we were going to win as soon as you saw that little bundle of joy!" - Richard Hatch, to Jeff Probst, about Mogo Mogo's raft Why it made the top 10: Going into ASS, we all knew that Richard would have a short stay, and even people who despised him in the first season felt sort of compelled to root for the original Survivor mastermind. Despite lasting just five episodes, Rich proved to be the most entertaining person of the entire season, and his status in the Survivor community made it inevitable that his final episode would be a fantastic send-off (for reasons both good and bad). On the one hand, you have to delight in seeing the master get overthrown by his apprentices (Ed. Note - The proper plural for "apprentice" is "apprenti" - Randal). On the other, Rich leaving destroys ASS-granted, he's behind the incident that caused Sue's departure in the next episode, which casts the first real ugly shadow over the season, but as I said, he was definitely the most entertaining person here. So in the context of the entire season, the end result is a bit disappointing; as a standalone episode, it's tremendous. Rich's Less Famous Dance: After Jeff snuffs out his torch, Rich does a twirl as he repeats what word over and over?
7. Episode 407…True Lies April 11, 2002 Maraamu finds an ancient Marquesan burial, and soon both tribes learn that a representative must be chosen to go to an unknown destination. Kathy went for Maraamu and Rob went for Rotu. The two were required to come up with a name and flag for the merged tribe. While there, the two formed an alliance. Back at Soliantu (the new merged tribe), Rob confronted Zoe about her plan to vote out Kathy. Realizing that she needed immunity, Kathy gave it her all in the balance/endurance challenge and won. At camp, Rob and Sean confronted John about voting strategies. A new twist was revealed at Tribal Council: the immunity winner could give immunity to someone else. Kathy rejected the offer, and Rob was voted off. Quote: "Zoe's lying to me, they're all lying to me! They're all lying to me and I'm being played as a pawn." - Kathy Vavrick O'Brien Why it made the top 10: Never mind All-Stars; this episode is Rob Mariano's shining moment on Survivor…on reality TV in general in fact. Ok, so it's also his last Marquesan stand, but the way he deals with John and especially Zoe in this episode is brilliant. I believe it was the morning this episode aired that Rich Hatch was on The Early Show and touted Rob as the greatest player in Survivor history…ironic, yes, but he had a point-while it was incredibly unlikely to lead to a victory, there was no bullshit here; just straight-up, ballsy play the likes of which we'd never seen before. His summit with Kathy was an amazing meeting between two of the greatest characters of all time (let alone the season-by the way, Kathy's above quote may be my second favorite confessional ever after Greg's flying fish one; the ominous music just underscores what a great realization it is), and while Gabe's boot was the early catalyst, the Rotu 4 downfall is set into motion here. This is the exact opposite of Rich's boot in ASS-it's disappointing to see such a great character leave in this episode, but taken as the seventh chapter of the season and knowing what it eventually leads to (just one week later in fact), this is an extraordinarily satisfying episode. Zoe's Shining Moment: When Boston Rob gave Zoe a sarcastic compliment, the irony goes over her head and she thanks him for it. What did he tell her?
6. Episode 711…The Great Lie November 26, 2003 After Rupert was voted off, an angry Sandra tossed out the fish he had caught. The blame was thrown at Christa, however. At the reward challenge, the contestants got a chance to win a visit from their loved ones. When Jon's best friend came out, he told Jon some sad news: Jon's grandmother had died. The rest of the tribe allowed Jon to win the challenge and spend time with his friend to get more info. While alone at camp, Jon congratulated his friend on a great performance-it had all been an act to gain sympathy. He used that sympathy to save his ally Burton from being voted off, and convinced Christa and Sandra to vote for Tijuana, who left the game 5-2. Quote: "She died, dude." - Thunder D Why it made the top 10: Um…because it's hysterical. It's so wrong it's right. As much as they would deny it, I bet Christa spoke for almost every single person who's ever played this game when she said that she wish she'd thought of the dead grandma prank first. It just plays out so perfectly that even if you think Fairplay's an ass for doing it (which isn't really off the mark), you've got to admire how brilliantly he orchestrated the whole thing. It's easily the best moment to come out of a family challenge, and the best thing is he actually uses it as leverage to get Sandra and Christa on his side for the next vote. I have a feeling Fairplay will end up being like Hatch in ASS next season, where most of the people who hated him with a passion the first time will be rooting for him. I know I am. 5. Episode 305…The Twist November 8, 2001 The younger members of Samburu came back from Tribal Council angry at Frank and Teresa, who didn't follow the order to cast their votes for Lindsey. The next morning, the tribes receive Tree Mail instructing them to send their three best members to the original drop-off point. Boran sends Lex, Kelly, and Tom. Samburu sends Frank, Teresa, and Silas. Little do they know that they are about to take part in the first Survivor twist-all six of them swapped tribes. Ethan decided that the new Boran tribe should throw the immunity challenge and rid themselves of a threat. They did, and the once-powerful Silas got the boot. Quote: "I am not on the Samburu tribe. The red is a red herring; it's a false front. I am still on Boran, and so is Lex and so is Tom." - Kelly Goldsmith Why it made the top 10: One of the unwritten rules of reality TV is that when a promo boasts "An episode like never before!" or demands that you not miss the first 15 minutes, the episode will inevitably be one of the lamest and most boring installments ever. Welcome to the exception. A cursory look at just about any episode from Palau, Guatemala, Panama, Cook Islands, and Fiji shows that twists are at this point so expected and pop up so frequently that the players (let alone viewers) barely react to them. But back then, something as simple as a tribal swap was a huge deal that shocked the crap out of me. And I'll absolutely admit, I thought it was unfair at first. "They can't do that! People had plans; this totally screws everybody up!" Then 45 minutes later, Silas was voted out and I adored the switch. My only real complaint about this episode is that there was a reward challenge, when they really should've spent more time showing the players' reactions to the twist, but I guess the producers didn't want to show ten people bitching, "This is so unfair!" and Frank and Teresa giving it a thumbs up. Fun with Anagrams: Which of these is not a possible anagram for Silas's name?
4. Episode 801…They're Back! February 1, 2004 18 players from past seasons have returned to play the game a second time. Divided into three tribes (Chapera, Mogo Mogo, and Saboga), they are given only a machete and map to water. All three tribes have difficulty making fire, and at Chapera, after Rob M. clashed with Alicia, he and Amber made an alliance. An alliance between Rudy and Rupert was formed at Saboga as well. The first challenge was an updated version of Quest for Fire, from the first episode of Survivor. Saboga lost, and Rudy and Rupert were caught in the middle: Ethan and Tina, the past winners, tried to convince them to stick with them, as they were more honest; while Jenna L. and Jerri thought that the winners should be the first to go. In the end, Rudy and Rupert decided to vote off Tina. Quote: "Richard Hatch just got naked! Survivor All-Stars is officially on!" - Jeff Probst Why it made the top 10: If you weren't grinning and giggling with glee like a schoolgirl the second this began airing, I don't know how the hell you stumbled upon this list, because you're obviously not a Survivor fan. Seriously, I don't think the smile left my face during the entire hour. Yeah, the season ended up being a disappointment, whatever. But nothing can ever detract from this episode. My TV set must have been emitting some pot fumes while it was airing, because I got freakin' high just watching it. It wasn't my ideal cast, but let's be real here; it could've been Richard, Rudy, Jerri, and Kathy and 14 Jeds and Patricias and we would've been thrilled with the premiere no matter what. Connect the Tribes: The producers did their best to split past alliances up so that they didn't start on the same tribe-the three Boran boys for example. They also happened to split up three people who all had a connection to a certain Boran boy. Which one? What was the connection? And who were the three who all started on opposing tribes?
3. Episode 408…Jury's Out April 18, 2002 John was making it clear that Sean was going to be voted off. With the exception of Kathy and Vecepia, everyone seemed to agree with John. But then, in an immunity challenge designed to show the pecking order, John, Tammy, Robert, and Zoe showed Paschal and Neleh exactly where they stood in the alliance: fifth and sixth. After ignoring the signs for so long, Paschal was finally convinced that he needed to change his game plan if he wanted to go much further. After swearing that he would never align with Sean, Paschal joined him, Vecepia, Kathy, and Neleh to break up the powerful Rotu 4 alliance, causing the greatest power shift in Survivor history. Their five votes (as well as Zoe's) sent John out of the game. Quote: "Neleh and Paschal I think are really supporting my success in this game, and are really rooting for me. And knowing that you can rely upon those two people, I mean, it's like two free passes." - John Carroll Why it made the top 10: You were expecting this to be #2? So was I. But #3 is hardly a ranking to be ashamed of, and this power shift episode deserves all the credit it very often gets. It was the first time that the underdogs came out on top, and it just made for an incredible episode. This is another one like Borneo's merge episode where the first half can probably be discounted (flying kites, what fun!) but the difference is that this one has drama and conflict throughout. The weird thing about this episode is that every time I watch it feels like the first time in that I'm still on the edge of my seat when we get that first inkling that Neleh and Paschal's eyes are finally open. The result's no longer up in the air, but it's still just as satisfying to watch as it was back in 2002. Trivia: Contrary to popular belief, Neleh and Paschal weren't ganged up on immediately after Sean, Vee, and Kathy got out; in fact, Neleh outlasted two members of the Rotu 4. Which ones?
2. Episode 109…Old and New Bonds July 26, 2000 When Colleen wins a barbeque dinner reward, she takes Jenna along. The two of them realized that Pagong's days on the island were numbered, and decided that they would try to form an alliance with Gervase, Sean, and Kelly. Sean refused to drift from his alphabetical voting strategy, and was very vocal that his vote would be going to Jenna. Meanwhile, Richard decided to celebrate his 39th birthday in the nude. At Tribal Council, Kelly votes against Sean, the three remaining Pagong members vote for Rich, but unbeknownst to Sean; Rich, Sue, and Rudy join him in voting for Jenna, and she becomes the ninth to leave the game. Quote: "I think [Jenna's] a safe vote tonight. If I felt she was in jeopardy, I would think twice, at the very least, in casting my vote." - Sean Kenniff Why it made the top 10: This is seriously the blueprint for how regular episodes need to be. Everybody gets a story and they all tie together somehow; the suspense isn't artificial whatsoever; and there aren't any segments that slow down the proceedings. The entire alphabet voting controversy comes together in any orgy of hilarity, shock, stupidity, and awesomeness. Colleen and Rudy both win challenges (how cool is that?). Jenna Lewis goes home, and Probst digs the point further by revealing the last vote with, "J…for Jenna." As excellent as John's boot in Marquesas is, there just really isn't anything wrong with this episode in the slightest. So it gets the nod. The Name Game: What names did Colleen and Jenna announced that they were now adopting thanks to Sean's strategy?
1. Episode 113…Season Finale August 23, 2000 More than 50 million viewers watched as television history was made and the first Survivor victor was crowned. At the final four, Kelly continued her winning streak when she won the Fallen Comrades challenge to see how much she knew about her fellow castaways. After an initial vote resulted in a tie between Sue and Rich, Kelly decided to change her vote, and Sue left the game. The final challenge tested Rich, Rudy, and Kelly's endurance. They each had one hand on the immunity idol; the one who took their hand off last would be the winner. Realizing that both of his opponents would take him to the final two anyway, Rich voluntarily stepped down, and Kelly eventually won the challenge. As Rich expected, she voted off Rudy. During the final Tribal Council, the jury each got to ask a question or make a comment to the final two. When it was Sue's turn, she entered into a speech that is considered by many (including Jeff Probst) to be the greatest Survivor moment ever. She compared Rich and Kelly to two vermin of the island, a snake and a rat, respectively. Sue then cast one of four votes that made Richard the victor of the first Survivor competition, and television was never the same again. Quote: "I feel we owe it to the island spirits that we have learned to come to know to let it be in the end the way Mother Nature intended it to be: for the snake to eat the rat." - Sue Hawk Why it's #1: Duh. Trivia: In his vote for Kelly to win, what does Gervase say she can do with the money once she wins? |
