My favorite part of "Medical Emergency" was when Shane said, "I'll kill you. No, I will! I will drive up to your shitty little apartment and
kill you and then I will go to my club and that will be it."
Courtney: "That's nice! Why do you say my apartment is shitty!" Shane: "Obviously I've never even been to your apartment! Stop taking everything so personal!" |

My favorite part of "Medical Emergency" was all of the Courtney moments, but especially this confessional, "It was like the cherry and
the icing on top of a pretty poo poo day." That still cracks me up!

The Vanuatu finale however is only 2nd to the Amazon finale as one of my least favorite survivor episodes, just for how sick it made me feel. Oh man, the Amazon finale kills me. I've only watched it once since it originally aired; I can stomach it until the votes are read but I'll totally agree that the end result is painful. It's the only season where the eventual winner effects in a major negative way when I do rankings. CR, PT, BB, L5 - all correct! The banana one is still up for grabs, everyone else...
35. Episode 705…Everyone's Hero October 16, 2003 When Tree Mail arrived for the immunity challenge, it was obvious that it was the gross food challenge, and Drake made a plan. Predicting that it would come down to a tiebreaker, Michelle would pretend to have trouble getting down the food (which turned out to be a smoothie). When the time came for Michelle to drink her smoothie, she didn't keep her part of the deal, and in the tiebreaker, Sandra lost the challenge for Drake. Because she messed up the plan, Michelle was voted off. Quote: "These guys work very hard at not working. They fight and argue and bicker and bitch amongst
each other so much that I know why it takes them hours to do anything. I know why they don't really do great in the challenges, I know why they're not
really a great team." - Rupert Boneham, on Morgan
Why it made the top 40: I'm always surprised that this episode isn't brought up much more, and that people generally consider it one of the worst Pearl Islands episodes, because this has always been a favorite of mine. I know Rupert's hardly popular at Sucks, but his scenes at Morgan were a lot of fun to watch, especially since they were so completely clueless about everything, and rather than have Rupert teach them stuff, they just slave the guy around for a day. But it's the second half of the episode that truly rocks my world, with the most fun gross food challenge ever and arguably the most justified boot of all time. Besides the premiere, this is easily the best pre-merge episode of Pearl Islands…and if you disagree, I will fight you. Craving Jeff's Special: Which three Morgan players went twice during the gross food challenge?
34. Episode 1001…This Has Never Happened Before! February 17, 2005 20 new players embarked on the adventure of a lifetime, with virtually no instructions. Ian and Jolanda managed to claim immunity necklaces that ensured their safety until just day 2, when they were in charge of creating two tribes with nine members each. The two players that weren't picked on tribes, Jonathan and Wanda, were out of the game. Ian and Jolanda then lost their immunity, and the two tribes returned to the same beach. Ian's tribe, Koror, was older, while Jolanda's tribe, Ulong, was younger and more physical. Ulong lost the first immunity challenge, and Koror chose to move to a new beach. On their way there, they lost their box of fire supplies when their boat capsized. Feeling like an outsider, Angie managed to find a way out of getting the boot, when she formed an alliance to take out the domineering Jolanda. Quote: "Jeff's a son of a bitch." - James Miller Why it made the top 40: Besides the people who couldn't get over the pick'em twist, who didn't love this episode when it first aired? On paper it should suck, being that it has 20 contestants and there's arguably too much going on for an hour-long premiere. It's like I said after the China premiere, which I also loved-that episode was great because it went back to the way Survivor used to be. The Palau premiere was excellent because it was so unlike anything we'd seen before on the show. Thanks for the Ride: In both the second episode and the finale, two people cast their votes and made mention of the fact that they were basing it on who picked them to be on a tribe in the premiere. Who were the two voters?
33. Episode 802…Panicked, Desperate, Thirsty as Hell February 5, 2004 The tribes were still having difficulty getting fire, and when Saboga won the reward challenge, they chose to give all three tribes a flint, pan, and clue to the lockbox they had received earlier, which contained rice. At the immunity challenge, Saboga was off to an early lead, but soon found themselves heading back to Tribal Council. Feeling vulnerable as a past winner, Ethan tried to convince Jenna L. and Jerri to vote off the weaker Rudy. The girls went with Ethan, and voted off Rudy, who then threatened their lives in his final words. Quote: "If I were them, I'd steer clear of me. I've got a lot of friends." - Rudy Boesch's warm and fuzzy final message to his tribemates Why it made the top 40: Rudy's easily one of the most popular Survivors of all time, and like pretty much everyone else, I was incredibly upset to see him leave ASS after a mere two episodes. But what I love about this one is the fact that pretty much all of Saboga's airtime is just a tribute to Rudy. You have Rudy telling the tribe war stories in his trademark hilarious way, Jeff Probst delivering some really kind words after Rudy left, and even Jerri Manthey is driven to !+!@# when he leaves. Jerri! It's just a really nice episode. Plus, Rudy has the greatest final words ever. Spot the Difference: Find the five differences between the two pictures below.
32. Episode 411…The Princess May 2, 2002 It was Vecepia's birthday, and the tribe celebrated with a special breakfast. (Sean later sang her "Happy Birthday.") Despite his age, Paschal won a strength-based reward challenge, and won a night on a cruise ship. He had the choice of taking someone, and chose Neleh, despite it being Vecepia's birthday, which irked Sean. When Paschal and Neleh returned, they hadn't brought back any food for the tribe, although Neleh offered them a mint she already had in her mouth. Robert hoped to catch a pig and for Tammy to win immunity, so that neither of them would be voted off. However, Robert won immunity and Tammy became the third member of the jury. Quote: "You're offering seven starving adults a piece of candy out of your mouth…that's like saying, anybody want this piece of doo-doo?" - Sean Rector Why it made the top 40: Most of the episodes on this list made the cut because they either came together perfectly or were too major to be ignored. And unfortunately, I really can't say that about this episode. It had a pretty predictable end result and in the context of the season, it really wasn't all that big a deal. But Marquesas is one of only four seasons where there's not a dud episode in the bunch, and this episode has two fantastic moments. Neleh and the mint is classic, and I don't really need to get into it. But nobody seems to give credit to the moment that made the mint offer possible-Paschal winning the reward challenge, where they had to carry a huge rock through the water. And I have to say; this is absolutely one of the most impressive things I've ever seen on the show. As corny as it sounds, I literally get a lump in my throat every time I see it. So even though the mint offer is probably the highlight of the episode, Paschal's win is what puts it over the top. Trivia: Paschal couldn't have cared less about being frugal at the reward, leaving a $200 tip because he got to use whose personal Visa card? (Here's my tip: Never give old people credit cards.)
31. Episode 310…Dinner, Movie, and a Betrayal December 13, 2001 The players are distracted by a massive boil forming on Tom's neck. Meanwhile, the tribe is required to divide into pairs for a reward challenge. Enemies Frank and Brandon end up being a pair, and win the reward challenge, a night at the movies. That's when plotting began at camp. Lex hoped to vote off Frank, while Ethan and Tom didn't trust Brandon. Lex won immunity, but at Tribal Council, he was unable to convince his two allies to vote for Frank, and Brandon was voted off 6-2. Quote: "I've got a date with Frank!" - Brandon Quinton Why it made the top 40: This is another one that isn't the most thrilling episode from start to finish by any means, but has an aspect that was too great to ignore. As soon as the reward challenge pairs are figured out, the other three teams pretty much know that it's their civic duty to lose this challenge, because Frank and Brandon going on a reward together is the most perfect situation imaginable. The hilarity starts even before the date itself, because at the challenge, Brandon basically barks orders at Frank and tells him to get moving. Brandon totally made Frank his bitch. And then they put their differences aside to watch the movie, and it's actually a really nice scene. They used to love doing the gay guy/homophobe pair on the same tribe and it never ended up changing anybody's mind but there was at least one moment where they kind of humanized each other and appreciated one another's company. They really need to bring this dynamic back. Match Game: Match each person on the left to his or her reward challenge partner on the right. You need to get them all
right to get credit.

That PI episode is one of the weaker ones of the season. I mean, it's still a decent episode because PI's a great season, but I'd argue
it's probably the weakest pre-merge episode (and the second weakest episode of all). Michelle's mistake was just painful to watch, and I didn't
enjoy seeing her get the boot after being such an idiot in the challenge.
I loved the Palau premiere, but I will say I was devastated to see Wanda leave. That almost soured the whole thing for me, even though it was the only episode where I liked Colby (he was actually my favorite after the premiere). I'm not so sure the Marquesas and Africa episodes deserve to be so high, since I don't recall a lot going on in either of them. The rewards provided some comedic value, but that's about it. beatles20147 wrote:subgenre took the fun one, so I'll go with this question. Ibrehem avoided voting for Ashlee as the second Tribal Council (voting for Kim instead) because Ashlee picked him to be on Ulong. And Janu voted for Tom at the final Tribal Council partially because he picked her for Koror. |

30. Episode 1012…We'll Make You Pay May 5, 2005 At the reward challenge, Ian and Tom realized that they had lost Katie's loyalty. While she, Gregg, and Jenn were off on a yacht, enjoying their reward, Caryn, Ian, and Tom hatched a plan to oust Gregg. To make sure Gregg didn't get suspicious, Caryn acted as though she was going to go. Minutes before Tribal Council, Ian revealed the plan to Katie, and she joined Caryn, Ian, and Tom in voting off Gregg. Quote: "No, we'll pay you back." - Tom Westman to Gregg after he and Ian weren't picked to go on the reward Why it made the top 30: This is one that just blew me away the night it aired. Even though I'm a Palau fan, I've always agreed with a lot of the criticisms people have with it, one of them being that it was possibly the most predictable season ever (at least until Fiji). This episode kind of took a break from the obvious boot order though, and Caryn actually had a personality for the first time. You've got to love Jenn reacting to Gregg's boot in silent disgust and Gregg looking like somebody just kicked him in the stomach. One scene that always makes me laugh for some reason (if you haven't already noticed, I'm easily amused) is Tom and Ian making an ultra-dramatic agreement to pull rocks if it comes down to a tie. They make it seem as though they're playing Russian Roulette, but they want to get a sniper to off Gregg before they have to play. Caryn actually does a surprisingly awesome job acting to convince Gregg that she knows she's going, but even though it worked, in hindsight it's such an idiotic plan because wouldn't someone who knows they're getting voted out try to plot and save themselves? But I love the episodes that don't really hide the boot and just showcase the complete strategy from start to finish. I call them "Anatomy of a Blindside" episodes and this is definitely not the last one that makes this list. Like I Said, I'm Easily Amused: …But I know I'm not the only one who laughs at this every time I see the episode. What is Gregg's best friend's name?
29. Episode 401…Back to the Beach February 28, 2002 For the first time on Survivor, the 16 castaways are stranded without any water or food. When Maraamu was paddling to the beach, Sarah relaxed as the others worked. Sean claimed that it was "almost like Cleopatra." At Rotu, Kathy began to order the tribe around, and at Maraamu, Hunter seemed to showcase leadership qualities. But one member of the tribe, Rob, was more interested in Sarah's body than anything else. Peter began talking about strategy too early in the game, and when Maraamu lost the first challenge, he became the first boot. Quote: "Sarah has a very cute body-she paid a lot for it." - Vecepia Towery Why it made the top 30: I think that this is easily the best "regular" premiere of them all, and it's definitely the funniest. Vecepia of all people delivers one of the best lines of the entire season with a totally uncharacteristic knock at Sarah; we get introduced to one of the biggest characters in reality TV history, Boston Rob, via…him chasing a rooster around; Kathy starting the game off on a terrible foot (that fortunately didn't last too long); and the most entertaining first boot ever. Peter talking about holes and the tribe's facial expressions are priceless and Boston Rob, king of unnecessarily rude comments actually calls Peter…a "fruit loop." Oh man, I can't believe he went there! Buff Enough: Marquesas is the final season in which what word is printed on the Survivors' buffs?
28. Episode 607…Girls Gone Wilder March 26, 2003 The two tribes merged, and the women hoped to vote off the sexist Roger, who was bashed throughout the episode by both sexes. The immunity challenge was the classic "Perch" challenge from the second season. Jenna and Heidi offered to strip if they could get chocolate and peanut butter. They got their food, and stayed true to their promise. Deena won the challenge, and the women got their wish when Roger was ousted. Quote: "The only way Roger is gonna win immunity is if it's a contest of 'Name That Perry Como Song.' Or perhaps 'What Type of Prune is This?'" - Rob Cesternino Why it made the top 30: You know, when this first aired, until Tribal Council started, I was convinced that all the Roger boot discussion was a red herring, because there was no way they would make the boot so obvious. They literally showed almost everyone talking about how priceless this blindside is going to be, how Roger is totally clueless that he's going to be voted out…I thought for sure there would be some last-minute decision where the guys got together for the vote, but it never happened. Oh yeah, and Jenna and Heidi stripped for chocolate and peanut butter, but it was censored and neither of them were looking all that superb at the moment, so I've never understood why people made such a big deal out of it. I guess they got a Playboy cover for it, so more power to 'em. But yeah, the reason it makes the top 30 is because they not only don't hide the boot at all, but they really go out of their way to make Roger come off as a complete asshole. It's easily the most one-sided episode ever. Fun with Reruns: The ending of this first post-merge challenge exactly duplicated the events of a previous one. What happened?
27. Episode 303…The Gods Are Angry October 25, 2001 At Boran, two lions came very close to the camp when most of the tribe was sleeping. Samburu was dealing with a problem of their own: the younger members of the tribe lazed around, while the older members did all the work. The younger members even ate without the rest of the tribe, and Lindsey made bead necklaces for her alliance. Boran won clean water at Jeff Probst's favorite challenge ever, Rock 'n' Roll. Boran also won the S.O.S. immunity challenge, sending Samburu to their first Tribal Council. A deadlocked tie resulted in Carl and Lindsey facing off in a trivia competition. Lindsey won, and Carl's torch was snuffed. Quote: "They're immature, they're trying to get under our skin, and it's working." - Carl Bilancione, on the younger members of Samburu Why it made the top 30: This is an episode that is impossible to appreciate without knowing how the rest of the season goes. Because when you're watching it for the first time and don't know that the game will change in a major way in just two episodes, the end result just makes you lose all hope. The age split at Samburu really made the entire tribe come across poorly, save for Teresa and maybe Kim. But there's no question that the elders are the more bearable bunch so it's incredibly depressing when Lindsey wins the tiebreaker. That said, the build-up to the tie is what earns it a spot on the countdown. You really can't predict the boot here, because it's not like there's even a swing vote or a dilemma here; it's flat-out going to be a tie. There really is a lot of suspense in this episode, and I have to say the intro scene with Boran getting scared by a few lions is possibly the most 'real' thing ever on the show as far as showing, hey, these people aren't on a Club Med vacation here. Well, in That Case…: With Carl's departure, it became clear that the young members of Samburu would be picking off the older members if they had to go to Tribal Council again. But because of the tiebreaker rules using previous votes, in the next episode, the younger members wanted Frank, Linda, and Teresa to do them a favor and pile their votes onto Lindsey rather than put another member at future risk. When Linda asked what was in it for the older trio, what did Brandon tell her?
26. Episode 210…Honeymoon or Not? March 29, 2001 When the Barramundi tribe receives Tree Mail, it says that they need to divide into four pairs of one man and one woman. Jerri immediately declares that she wants to be with Colby. The rest of the tribe feels that's unfair, and the women pull names out of a hat to determine the partnerships. Jerri ends up picking Colby anyway, and they win a helicopter trip to the Great Barrier Reef. With Nick next on the pecking order, he desperately needed immunity. He won the challenge, and Ogakor decided that Elisabeth would be the next target. However, when the votes were read, only Jerri and Amber had voted for Elisabeth. Everyone else decided it was time to get rid of Jerri's bad attitude. Quote: "When did this game start being fair?" - Jerri Manthey Why it made the top 30: Who wasn't ecstatic when this episode aired? The entire country, even people who didn't watch Survivor, knew and hated Jerri Manthey. The thing is, I think we all begrudgingly admitted that she was entertaining and if she got voted out, the show would lose a great character, but she was so annoying and unlikable that every Friday morning, the first thing people said at school or the office was "Can you believe that Jerri's still around? I can't stand her!" As far as villains go, she's probably one of the tamest ever featured on the show, yet she's easily the greatest, just because people got so wrapped up in Jerri hatred. The best part of the episode isn't her boot itself but the reward she shares with Colby, and how behind her back, they have completely polarizing views on the whole thing, and it's probably the highlight of the season's best story arc of Jerri's unrequited lust for Colby. And the immunity challenge is excellent-not only does Nick pull off a much-needed win, but the challenge itself is pretty cool and should be brought back. Jerri's boot ultimately does hurt the season, but I don't know if I'd want to have her stick around at the expense of this excellent episode. Match Game: Match the women to their reward challenge partners. You need to have all of them right to get credit.
