You can see the outline of the talking points he and his lawyer have come up with. The fact that he claimed the trainer injected him with painkillers and
vitamins makes me think there are potential corroborating witnesses out there who saw him get the injections, but have no way of proving what they were. He
also challenged whoever provided the stuff to him in the first place to come forward. That means whoever his source was is still loyal and willing to cover
for him. He also seemed to waffle over the lie detector test, and question whether the results would be reliable or not.

Clemens actions are understandable.
He wants to get into the Hall of Fame. If he is banned from it, he'll become a sad and pathetic figure like Pete Rose, and his earnings as a retired player will be sliced by 70 percent. So the goal is to retire now, put up a spirited defense (no lawsuits because that would open himself up to the discovery process- no small thing in Federal courts!) and hope that he can engender enough doubt to get the votes for the Hall of Fame. |
