You can actually tell Christina actually isn't that adept either. Japanese is a hard language.

You would think with all the English speaking tourists, the signs would be multilingual. The post office clearly said Post Office in English, why not the road
signs?

White teams? How about Ron yelling Portuguese "obligado" at his cabbie.

What baffled me ever more was Christina's statement of how she visits Japan for half a year to study the language.

I think arigato is the equivalent of "thank you" in Japanese. (Apparently borrowed from the Portuguese root
...)
ETA: Wiki says "Arigato" means "thank you", but is NOT borrowed from "Obrigado" and that anyone who knows anything about Japanese would not make the mistake I just made!

Well I spelled the Portuguese word wrong. But if it wasn't obrigado then it sounded like that to me. And I swear he or someone else was saying it in
Africa. I am so confused. Why can't we just go back to the endless rapidos. I miss the endless rapidos.

"Domo Arigato, Mr. Roboto" would have fit in better with the Detour that Don and Nick did.
But as long as we work it in somewhere. |

Christina is pretty good with languages. She is obviously fluent in Chinese (Mandarin or Cantonese) since she spoke to her Dad before in that. She is always
thanking the natives in their language too. It seems she prepares and studies the key words of whatever location they're going to. She is really smart
and that's why I like her. We need more competitive and nice chicks like her!

If you knew you were going to be on the Amazing Race, why wouldn't you learn about 25-30 key words in several different languages? Just attempting to speak
in a country's native language might endear you enough to the natives for them to help you out.

You would think the Japanese would know some English as it is the number one destination for ESL teachers. I tried twice to go to Japan with two different organizations in order to teach English and these organizations send dozens of ESL teachers to places like Japan and Taiwan every year. |

I've been to Japan and a lot of the road signs are both in Japanese and English, but only on main roads. Many of the buildings may have the words on the
building in English (such as the post office) but not all of them do. A lot of the places that do have English signs are not always the most helpful. (See
below!) I was surprised that they didn't encounter more English speaking natives as there are actually quite a few in Osaka.

describe their products. <-- should you be trying to find the

Just thought I'd mention: Here in San Francisco a high proportion -- perhaps the highest -- of our international tourists are from Japan, yet our street
signs are not in Japanese.

She is awesome, and it's great to see someone like her doing so well on this show, because she shows that education and intelligence do get you far. It
seemed like she spoke it pretty well.

Basically, they know some English, but just can't apply it practically. Maybe it's the same way in Japan. |
