Are there logistical issues with racers, cameramen and soundmen all on public transport? Especially if they cram people in like some pictures I have seen.
Taxis do isolate the racers from the public more.

Teams used the subway in the Japan leg of TARA2, so I don't see why American TAR couldn't do it...

Though wisely they avoided Grope Train 3 this season.
I think it'd be great if they put the transit as an integral part of the challenge (i.e. they'd have to each get 3 different puzzle pieces and have to go to 6 different stations to get them (say piece A would be available at 2 of the stations, B at another 2, and C at another 2). They probably eschew the mass transit probably because it's less compelling TV - most systems aren't THAT hard to figure out. -QG |

It was the same on All Stars when teams were told to take a cab in Hong Kong to Hankow Road when mass transport is excellent. Maybe the producers did not want anybody taking pictures of the teams. Also did you notice they gave more money this time compared to the All Stars HK leg? |

I agree completely that they should have used the train!
Another thing about the train system being excellent all over Japan, rush hour can be quite "interesting". While Osaka isn't quite like Shinjuku (where BJ/Tyler did their "baiku-bin" delivery in TAR9) at 8:30AM on a weekday, I am sure that stations like Umeda/Osaka, Namba, Shin-Osaka, etc. come pretty close. If you have ever been to Tokyo, you know what I mean. Besides, it's cheaper to ride the train than to ride the taxi. I was thinking it was because Elise/Bertram didn't get filming rights from JR West and the Osaka Subway authority, until I saw avant tai's posting. So it can't be that. I am guessing that the logistics of using taxis are easier. For instance, the NDA paperwork that the camera/sound guys carry around when non-racers are filmed on the race - it's easier to get one taxi driver to sign a form rather than getting multiple people on a train. Also, even Japanese taxis can fit 4 customers (heck, if the Indian three-wheelers can carry a team + camera + sound guys, it's not a problem) comfortably. And with taxis, there is a travel time variability depending on the route. Thanks to that, Ron/Christina got ahead of Jenn/Nate. (dejavu Dubronik?) |

I like taxis in places like Japan where the taxi drivers say they know where they're going and they don't and where the taxi drivers don't speak
english and the racers use absurd sign language to communicate. Besides, I loved the dying taxi driver this week.

Trains are cool but the car entertainment this episode was amazing! We need more racers driving cars in foreign countries!
