I never watched Friends. It's never been shown in re-runs where I live. I read that a lot of money was spent on the Cosby show to air as re-runs, but it
wasn't popular as a re-run.

They're not those people's bosses, but their selfish actions negatively impact many people...Um... it's their bosses actions that are negatively impacting those "not so important" people. Their bosses aren't paying them. That's who they should have a grievance with. |

The point is that reality shows are lucrative in foreign markets - just because they aren't shown as reruns for eternity does not diminish their value.Yes, it does diminish their value. If you can't continue to earn a profit of of something way after it's initial run then yes, it does diminish its value. They still play I Love Lucy reruns on weekends, meaning that a scripted show can continue to earn money more than 30 years after its initial run. Reality TV does not provide the same revenue streams the scripted fare does. For everyone that finds Friends tired and old there is a new generation of viewers that discovers it. The same cannot be said of reality TV programs. I never watched Friends. It's never been shown in re-runs where I live. I read that a lot of money was spent on the Cosby show to air as re-runs, but it wasn't popular as a re-run.Please provide the link to this article. The Cosby Show is one of the most popular TV shows of all time. It was insanely popular in reruns (where it would handily beat the number 1 show on TV now as a rerun). It also continues to have a very lucrative syndication run and is aired worldwide.

You can read in wikipedia about the lack of success of the Cosby show in re-runs, although references aren't cited.

I can see how The Cosby Show would NOT be popular in reruns. Everyone got their fill of it when it was must see tv. Sugarhill continues to live in an alternate reality where reality shows aren't popular in foreign countries. |

^^^I never said reality shows aren't popular in foreign countries. But the revenue streams for scripted fare more than outpace their reality TV brethren.
What Lovejonze continues to fail to recognize is that scripted fare has a longer shelf life than reality TV, even if you personally have had your fill of such
and such show. And a longer shelf life means more profits, despite decreasing first run primetime airings. It's not as if scripted fare is no longer
popular it is just being viewed in a variety of different ways (i.e. DVD, DVR, Internet). Some shows, like I Love Lucy, The Cosby Show, Friends, Seinfeld,
Cheers, Frasier, Sex and the City) can be sold multiple times into syndication.
And wikipedia isn't the paragon of factual knowledge. If the Cosby Show weren't successful in reruns it would've disappeared from TV by now, but it continues to air reruns worldwide and nationwide. |

I first got online about eight years ago. I read about TV stations paying a lot of money to show reruns of the Cosby show, and the Cosby show not being
successful in reruns, in a newspaper article I read before I ever got online. That's why I couldn't provide a link to the article.

Reality shows even the most popular ones don't do well in national syndication and cable. Look how many highly rated reality shows have it's repeats stuck on the very low rated Fox Reality Channel because bigger cable networks don't think they are worth buying. |

Well when you're offered a choice between a shit sandwich or a shit salad, what choice do you have? They are making more reality shows. They cancelled
Big Shots today. They won't even air the 3 original episodes they had left. I'm just saying, these shows have low overhead compared to fictional
shows - there is a much bigger profit margin. People will watch tv or turn it off. Doesn't matter, life goes on. Maybe some of us can take this break
from TV to do something, like write a book or a screenplay. We can call ourselves striking writers.

Is there anything that prevents these studios from producing new shows outside the country, I mean besides cost? I can picture them creating a joint venture
with some canadian company. They might see it cheaper in the long run than paying residuals over and over.
Hollywood won't go away, but I think it is going to be drastically changed. The WGA and actors are going to get a good dose of reality for themselves. |

Lovejonze, you continue to have a limited view of how studios and networks make profits off of their shows. Yes, short term reality TV has a better profit margin when compared to scripted fare because of low production costs, but when the season ends its profits end with it. You can't continue to turn a profit on something that no one wants to watch after its conclusion, i.e. shorter shelf life. The revenue stream for reality TV is extremely limited whereas for the more expensive scripted fare it's almost limitless. But you keep banging that "It doesn't matter" drum, because nothing says indifference like repeated posts on a subject you have no vested interest in. |

For everyone that finds Friends tired and old there is a new generation of viewers that discovers it.For example, Full House, Cosby and The Brady Bunch are all shows that my current 6th grade students know enough about that they must have watched a few episodes. My 6 year old twin daughters love Full House as well. Anyway, the writers cannot be blamed for the workers not getting paid. I do think that since the media is changing so quickly, the proceeds need to be redistributed fairly. If things were fair and close to being equal, EVERY SINGLE person who worked on a show worked get a percentage, regardless of what their job title was. It takes everyone to make the show. In order to make a quality show, the writers are the most important part. Without them, the quality would not be there. Since it is in their best interest to join the union in order to work, the not so great writers are protected too, not just the quality writers. Does the writers' union have criteria for joining? Do they have to present scripts or some other examples of their best work? I am not sure what I think about unions. I belong to the teachers' union. A raise was negotiated last year and we are STILL the lowest paid county in our area. Due to state and federal budgets cuts (in turn due to the asinine NCLB laws that were not funded properly), the local news made it look like the teachers' raise was the reason that the kindergarten assistants lost their jobs. Even though the real reasons are the state and federal budgets cuts, uneducated parents do not see it that way. We have many uneducated parents in our area. Our union does fight for us and I am grateful for that. I think that unions are good for the middle class so they do not get taken advantage of, particularly in education and the service fields. |

Does the writers' union have criteria for joining? Do they have to present scripts or some other examples of their best work? The only criteria to join the WGA is to have either sold a script or be apart of a current writing staff. No samples need to be presented. They do not dictate who you can hire and if you can fire someone from a TV show. They also have no say about what film scripts can be sold. The market, i.e. studios, dictate what they buy. WGA has negotiated standard contracts that protect anyone that is fortunate to get work or sell a script. All writing work is contract work, it is not an hourly or yearly salary kind of job. |
