United States Navy Submarine Service October 26, 1976 - May 23, 1983.
My sub was the second sub on site during the Iranian Hostage crisis. And while we were on a Special Operation in 1981 we had a live torpedo shot at us by the Russian Navy. We can only guess we were detected, although we never accused them since we weren't supposed to be where we were in the first place. That's as close as I got to combat during my entire stint. Peace on my watch. |

Wow, you have my admiration, I would never be able to be in a sub for more than a minute.

The seamen was for me I expect?
As in "what's long and hard and full of seamen?" Well that's what would get me down there for the minute. |

Meh. It ain't what you think. The days of "Run Silent, Run Deep" are long gone. Subs of the modern era don't even feel like subs once
they're submerged. The crew's mess is like sitting in your living room: TV on, guys playing cards, radio playing, etc. Lots of room, compared to days
of yore. Best food in the Navy because on surface ships and shore stations the officers and enlisted men's food is prepared in two different areas and
served in two different areas. So while the officers may be having steaks the enlisted may be having spaghetti. But on subs there is only one galley so the
crew eats what the officers eat. Also you get extra pay for being on subs: Hazardous Duty Pay. It really was far more interesting than I ever would have
believed. Some days I miss it. Others, not so much. In all the years I was on subs we only had one guy actually freak out where we had to have him removed from
the boat. One other guy tried to fake it to get out of the Navy but it didn't work.

So I say - yeah I was in SAC mostly stationed at Westover in Springfield Mass. He says oh really ? I was at Westover, 18th Comm Squadron. I say Wow - I was in 18th Comm too, what year ? He says 1966 to 1968. Well lets just say we were both there at the same time. We worked in completely different units within the squadron and were on different floors of the barracks, but it was really freaky. so where were you stationed Pearl :-) |
