THROWING A CHALLENGE


I don't agree that there's never a time to throw a challenge. It's rare, but sometimes it makes sense and I don't think it's dishonorable in principle. It can be done dishonorably like these clowns did it, but to me, it's like a sac bunt or like sending in an enforcer in hockey. Sometimes you have to sacrifice to advance.

In my season, I wanted to throw a certain challenge because Jeff said that the losing team would vote someone out but would get Bruce when he came back from Exile Island. This was a chance to improve ourselves by losing: we lose, we cut our weakest player (Melinda or Cirie at the time) and improve the team by adding the Factor. Worse, if we win, La Mina, which already had us outgunned in terms of athleticism, would have cut their weakest player and added Bruce, making them even stronger. It would have been great to win and say "Rah rah!" but strategically, losing made more sense. I tried to get everyone to throw the challenge but no one understood the game enough to know you could even do that. Fortunately, Terry kicked our butts single-handedly so it wasn't an issue--we lost and got Bruce.

But throwing a challenge only works in situations like that-- IF it has a discrete and knowable outcome (like getting a stronger player) and IF the person/people hurt by the thrown challenge aren't left around to punish you later (i.e., Melinda or Cirie would have been mad at me for throwing the challenge and getting them booted, but they'd be over at Loser's Lodge, eating breakfast with Matthieu and playing Balderdash with Libby).

Here, the possible outcomes were way too open-ended. For one thing, if Erik had a bigger sack, he would have lined up with Aaron and James and blasted Peih-Gee or Jaime out of the game.

More importantly, it left one of the people that was attacked, James, still in the game. Did you see the look on his face at tribal? He's going to make his new mission to destroy these broads now. Law of Power # 15 says "Crush Your Enemy Totally". Don't leave an ember burning b/c it will be fanned into an inferno later. These clowns did James dirty, then were dumb enough to leave him in the game. Bad idea. If they were going to pull that crap, they should have picked Aaron or James to get rid of, made a friend of the other, and stick with the call, not try to be cutesie and pit them against each other.

And they made the wrong call here. They should have taken James out. That's a passionate dude and he believes in rules. An angry James is not someone I'd want to compete with, much less live with at camp…

I give Peih-Gee credit for at least being an active player and trying to make a power move. There's so many random twists now, you can't count on anything so you might as well play for the short term. And in theory, she could single-handedly knock out 2 of the top threats in the game. Not bad.
