Next time he drinks and gets in a car, you better get in the front passenger seat. You know, keep and eye on him and all that....

Ask yourself this question..."who will be my meal ticket when my dad dies?"
Or did you persuade him to name you as beneficiary in his will and insurance policies while he was in a drunken stupor..... and continue to kiss his ass so he won't change it? |

Having trouble with the quote button?
You asked for advice, and the people here gave you good stuff. Nothing left to argue. Choice: 1. Take away access to car. You said this is impossible. From what you said, I tend to agreee. 2. Call the cops. You say that's a no no. (and yes, it could be anonymous) 3. Confront him with the behavior. (hopefully while NOT drunk) It doesn't have to be an aggressive confrontation; share your concerns for him AND for others. And let him know YOU know about the DUI. It may shock him into listening. 4. Do nothing, but continue to whine, even after you have been given all the options. You may need to check out Alanon to help you understand how your behavior enables your father. And face it, your meal ticket is in jeopardy either way. He could get angry; or he could get dead. |

Someone has taken over the UC nic from MadWoman. Change has been evident the past couple of weeks.

One DUI should have cured him from drunk driving. Even one brush with the law & just the threat of a DUI made me never drive while drinking again.

ACOA here too. My father died alone after falling while drunk, hitting his head on a coffee table, and bleeding to death. He was 52.

I'm fortunate to not have parents that are alcoholics. However, my father is the product of two alcoholics, and I think that affected how he treated my
brother and I because of what he saw as a child. My husband is also the product of alcoholics, and it's been a battle at times with us, with me almost
walking out, before he realized he needed help. At least he hasn't driven drunk in the 4 years we've been together, since I would stay sober.
But back to UC...basically, you're going to have to decide if your free ride through school is more important than your father's, or another humans, life. You talk to him about his alcoholism, he can get upset and cut you off, or take your advice and maybe get help. He gets another DUI, it's going to cost money, which means less money for you based on the court costs and fines. He kills another person, your family will be sued and devastated forever. He kills himself, well, maybe you'll end up with some more money for school, but you won't have a dad. It sounds corny, but that's what is comes down to. My brother lost a friend due to a drunk driver, and at the age of 20 was a pallbearer. I would never wish that on anyone in their life. |

Am I mistaken or does dying under the influence...therefore causing your own death....make life insurance void? I know out and out suicide does.
