First of all she didn't "denigrade" anything, she quietly chose not to participate. What if in Survivor: US they made contestants attend a Christian mass? Is that OK? You can't stick people in a Buddhist monastery with monks and statues and religious icons everywhere and not call it worship. Lastly, the immunity idol does not symbolize a god, it symbolizes immunity, and she didn't worship it.

I think the intolerance is borne of fear, fear that they will appear to be taking a worshipful pose, which would be interpreted to mean they were actually worshiping something or someone else. For whatever reasons it compromised her belief system. So at that point of realization she had two choices. A)Stay and save face for national TV to show the world she is cool and can hang in a buddhist temple that is in direct conflict to her personal truth(whatever that is) or B) leave. She chose B. Let's crucify her! Then smear ourselves in her blood!
