I'd think if, like my grandmother, you'd never interacted with or seen blacks in anything but servile roles, or seen educated blacks, you might not get
that "something is wrong with this picture" vibe. I'm not sure when my mother stepped out of that world and into one where all people were equals
(except people who had every opportunity to improve themselves, but didn't), but she did. I think maybe it was being married to a military man and meeting
peple of other races who were of equal rank to my father that changed her. And since I went to totally integrated schools on Air Force bases, I didn't even
know predjudice existed until I started seeing the Freedom Marches and the contention against integrated schools and voting rights drives on TV.

It's an amazing historical fact that up into the 1960's this country was hardcore apartheid in the south, and the thing that ended it was the 1964
Civil Rights act - white southerners went out of segregation kicking and screaming.

Don't turn this into some kind of political thing.

CBR, thank you for your honest post. Kudos to your mother. B/c of people like her who were willing to step out from behind the iron wall, ethnic folk in this
country and across the globe were given a door to walk throu a bit more easily.
