That was actually the best part of the episode for me. I had incorrectly guessed that it was Claire who was going to die, so it was nice to be surprised and told that Charlie was going die instead. (I'm fine with either one of them disappearing from my screen either way :P)

I'm guessing if Desmond hadn't swam out to save her, Claire would have lived anyway somehow, but Charlie still would have died. Claire's gotten knocked around a good amount on the island but is still standing.
