Much like watching this series this season its all hell. When the writers said everything can be explained without the supernatural. Everyone is dead and everyone is in hell. I still watch this.. and every fuckin week I say how much I hate this show.

if i was lockes dad, getting hit in my car, shot up, waking up in a cell staring at the son you are convinced is dead, after a life of complete sin, i would think i was in hell too. i dont think the writers of the show are implying they actually are in hell, but something else

Plus I think it would be hard to fly a Helicopter into hell |

That line IMO, was a slap in the face from the producers/writers to those who won't shut up about Purgatory.

I think the whole hell-line and discovered-crash logic is just a rouse set up by the writers to keep people's interest and the mystery of the island afloat.
Obviously the old man would suspect he was in an afterlife setting after being snatched up with his experiences. But I think it's more probable it's some sort of island re-creation. As for finding the plane and discovering those who died: You can ask yourself 'who' discovered the plane. What corporations were sent to investigate? Ben's company probably went back and started fudging records. And could the government be involved in anyway? The people who know the existence of the island will want others to 'keep out.' |

Ok, seriously...
The Others went back and found Locke's dad in Ten. They caused him to crash, put him in a fake ambulance, drugged him, and brought him to the island. I think that's pretty obvious from the line, "They were even smiling when they (drugged me)." For some cult reason they wanted Locke to kill his dad. As for finding the wreckage of the plane, obviously that was somehow set-up by the corporation. |

I say the Others want to have Locke as their leader so they went and got his piece of shit old man so Locke could finally get rid of him. Locke's mind will finally be at peace and he can begin to show his true 'power' and teach the Others.
