1. Cook's first
2. Cook's second 3. Archuleta's first 4. Cook's third 5. Archuleta's second 6. Archuleta's third - so bad. I was embarrassed that the judges had to pimp it. |

First Round:
Archuleta was cliche. How many times has that song been done on AI? Still, his vocals were better, but not by much. Second Round: Cook kicked Archuleta's ass. I don't know what the judges were thinking. Arch seemed like he was at a theme park and Cook seemed like he was in concert. Third Round: Cook's song choice was bad, but his peformance was not nearly the trainwreck the judges seemed to think. He should have gone with something from the Goo Goo Dolls like "Name" or "Iris". Achie, on the other hand, while good, DID do something he had done before showing that he is not able to do anything original. Overall, Archuleta did better, but not even close to the disparity that the judges seemed to describe. If they wanted this thing to be close, they'd bring up past performances and somehow, subtly remind the audience of how these two have done week to week. The way they made it seem, it was as if Cook didn't deserve to be there. Winner: Unfortunately, because of tonight, Archuleta will win. Once againk, AI will let the more marketable person get away when they could have made this seem closer than they did. |

Since I'm not voting, I have plenty of time to do this and watch the suddenly fingerless bastard on Hell's
Kitchen. OUCH!
1. The World I Know. 2. Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me. 3. Imagine. 4. Dream Big. 5. In This Moment. Oopsie .. a bit of a gap ... 6. I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For. If you loved or hated one of these competitors, tonight's performances won't change anything for you. Personally, I didn't care much for either of them, but they both found ways to impress me. For me, David Cook showed that he can be a viable artist, with The World I Know and his selling of the otherwise boring Dream Big. OTOH, David Archuleta showed that he can be a viable artist, with a surprisingly good DLTSGDOM and a moving chorus on In This Moment. Brain: Archuleta. Heart: Danny Noriega would edge Alaina Alexander or Kristy Lee Cook in the Finale. Gut: Archuleta.

Just adjusting SLD's rankings:
1. Dream Big. 2. The World I Know. 3. Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me. 4. I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For. 5. Imagine. Oopsie .. a bit of a gap ... 6. In This Moment. I would really like to see each phone number limited to 5 votes. Instead of hours and hours of non-stop voting. What is the point of that? Is it supposed to measure something? You know something, maybe it is. The contestant whose fans ARE willing to log hundreds of votes per phone number are also more likely to buy all the merchandise: lunchboxes, backpacks, RealLife doll version... The contestant who logs more different vote numbers is going to sell more songs and performances via iTunes as well as traditional outlet CDs, but perhaps his fans won't fall for too much in the way of side product. Maybe a t-shirt? So, whichever wins in a given season, wins. In the end it won't matter to us, and it might suit the contestants too. The kind of performer who can absorbl the crazy kind of marketing doesn't care that much about the singing in the first place. For a few seasons now, I've been working on accepting that it's not about being happy with the winner, because 9 times out of 10, I won't be. Not 100%. But during the course of the show I'll have discovered someone or other who was worth listening to, and that's the prize most of us can take away from these few months. At least that's what I hope. Kind of saccharine, I know. The crazy judging patterns are so bizarre I have to question if they're genuine. They are OTT in their adoration of the Gasptard.

I think Cook was unique and different and actually did better in terms of being a "performing artist."
Archuleta showed he had vocals. I want Cook to win. I think Archuleta will win...Which won't be completely horrible. |

1. Archie - all three songs were good
2. Cook - sounded the best on the last song Since the average viewer of AI is now a 42 year old woman, I think Cook will pull an upset. Idol has lost young voters by the bucketful this year. Cook gets the Clay/Taylor fans who get their ovaries in an uproar when he does his stalker thing. So while Archie deserves it, Cook wins it. |

I don't think the show is "rigged"; rather, the judges have their favorites and self-programmed expectations. Tonight, their stale tastes were again revealed.
I've said it before and I stand behind it again: David Cook is the best Idol contestant I've seen. For Round 1, credit Clive Davis for doing a much better job than the judges or producers (last week) in selecting suitable songs. David Archuleta's style, for once, suited a song, and a good song at that. He didn't milk it or over-emote, although, as usual, he was on autopilot in terms of volume and tempo. Cook was excellent as usual, on a pretty good song. I thought the round was a tie.
Now let's go to Round 2. Neither contestant has a wide choice. Archuleta picks the 2008 (sorry Randy, it's not 2007 - did you catch that humdinger?) version of the same old self-congratulatory coronation song. It was a mirror image of the forgettable crap they made my man Taylor sing, and that Sparks willingly sang. Archie crooned it in his usual style - i.e., none - and it wasn't even that good a performance. Cook actually picks something different, adds a passable rock guitar, and lifts the performance out of the narrow coronation genre into something resembling a self-sustaining, real song. Yet Simon, summing up for Randy (Paula was almost absent tonight), and while admitting that Archuleta's tune was the same old egotistical crap, throws the round to Archuleta. Un-freaking-believable.
So far, so bad. Now we get to Round 3. One contestant tries something new and different. Personally I thought the song itself was just okay, but it did express a different side of the performer (thanks Paula), and wasn't the same type of song or performance as in the other two rounds. The other contestant rehashes an over-emoted performance of the safest stanza of a song that is softheaded if taken seriously. (Lennon was sleeping when he wrote Imagine; it only makes sense, and barely at that, if sung in the quiet, wry, ironic tone of the original.) So what happens? Randy and Simon slobber over the lazier contestant, Archuleta. So much for Randy Jackson praising risks. And when the chips were down, Simon Cowell - favorite song, the fifty-year old Unchained Melody - showed himself as Mr. Conventional. Their programmed expectations were upset, and their little brains couldn't take it.
When David Archuleta makes his CD, it'll sound like an old fashioned LP - an LP that skips at the end of a track because the stylus (needle) is broken. Every song will sound the same; same style, tempo, volume, modulation. He gave fine vocal performances tonight, and for most of the season. Of course he could do that - he's a veteran contestant, and when you don't have to worry about thinking through a song, you can devote all your practice time to vocal tricks. If Archuleta wins, he'll be an improvement over Sparks (and a more successful winner than Taylor or Ruben). Kudo Withholder, the previous poster, accurately praises DA's moxie in being at the top of his game tonight. But the show can do better than that.
All his posturing aside, I sense ambivalence in David Cook. I don't think he really wants to win, in terms of his musical career; rather, once in any contest, a contestant wants to win. In the end, he voted with his heart: in Round 3, he eschewed the safe, vote-getting choice. That would suffice for me, and besides, in the end, merit is merit. David Cook was the best all season, and the better performer - the better musician - tonight. For your reaction tonight, judges, I'm now going to throw a hundred or so votes in for him. PS - more than an hour into the voting, I am getting mostly busy signals. Last week, 95% of my calls sailed through. |

Round 1: David A. - Didn't think I would like it but I was shocked! Flawless vocals.
Round 2: David C. - Bette song choice. Could have been a song off his album! Round 3: David A. - Only b/c David Cooks choice was FOOLISH! American Idol 2008 is..... DAVID COOK. (Nigel will then cross "Rocker" off his Winners Check List, Next year...."Country Male") |
