Nothing Sacred (1937) - Carole Lombard, Frederic March

Carole Lombard was a goddess. She was beautiful, she was funny, and she was married to Clark Gable. Sadly, she died in 1941 in a plane crash.

Dude, everyone's making these lists. I am a huge movie buff, so I'm making a list of 30 movies you probably haven't seen but should see because
they're awesome. And why are they awesome? Because I said so.

You should! Have you seen "My Man Godfrey"?

I'm quite sure I won't have heard of any of these movies, but I guess that is the point of the thread anyway haha. I'm so jaded by current movies
that old movies feel like shit to me.

"Nothing Sacred" is actually in color. Technicolor, so nowadays it looks kind of awkward, plus the print has really faded and TPTB haven't deemed
it necessary to do a restoration. Nevertheless, it is in color! "My Man Godfrey" is available on Criterion and is probably the most well-known of the
Lombard screwball comedies.

Damn, I actually haven't seen that one. I'm sort of a movie nerd so I figured I'd be able to destroy the thread title's accusation.

I've seen all the movies on this list so far. Lombard > all reality TV blondes
I think 'Nothing Sacred' is public domain so you can legally download it for free. |

Good idea for a thread. And no, I haven't seen any Carole Lombard film. Looking forward to seeing what other great movies I haven't seen yet...

#29: Daughter from Danang (2002)
What happens when a documentary tries to film an emotional reconciliation between long lost loved-ones, and the loved-ones turn out to be mostly selfish and despicable? "Daughter from Danang" is the result. It's a documentary about an Amerasian girl born to a Vietnamese woman and an American G.I. After the war the Vietnamese mother made the hard choice to give up Heidi for adoption, since she was told Heidi would have lived a life being shunned by Vietnamese society. Heidi's life in America was not much happier, as she is estranged from her adoptive mother. The film reunites Heidi and her birth mother and her Vietnamese relatives. "Daughter from Danang" is very heartwarming until it's revealed that Heidi's Vietnamese family are kind of greedy freeloaders (maybe not their fault considering they live in abject poverty), and Heidi herself is a spoiled, cold princess. Exhibit A: when she admits her contempt at her mother's surroundings at a food market where her mother is buying food for a feast she is cooking *special for Heidi.* Later on, she admits that since she's returned from her visit she hasn't even tried to contact her mother again, with the cruel comment, "I don't know them." Only Heidi's birth mother comes out of the film with her dignity intact, as she tries to ward off her greedy relatives and bond with her daughter, to no avail. She wanted to give her daughter a better life, and then she wanted to reunite with her daughter, and she gets neither. It's a really sad documentary, and in my opinion required viewing for anyone interested in the Vietnam war.

It'd be funny if Tokyo Story was one of them. It's a pretty obscure movie here in America (though aparently popular in Japan). It's kind of
reaaaaaallllly boring though. Daughter from Danang sounds really good though. I'll have to look for it.

#28: Waterloo Bridge (1940) - Vivien Leigh, Robert Taylor
![]()
This was Vivien Leigh's personal favorite film (over "Gone With the Wind" and "Streetcar Named Desire," both of which nabbed her Oscars). It's one of those movies that's greater than one would expect, given the storyline, which is pure 1940s wartime melodrama/weepie. A ballerina falls in love with an officer in WWI, and all is well until she is dismissed from the company and then she mistakenly believes that her lover has died in the war. In desperation she becomes a prostitute, and ... well, just watch the movie. And while "Waterloo Bridge" definitely has many weaknesses (the American actor Robert Taylor was a pretty face and nothing more, and he doesn't even try for a British accent, and Leigh stretches credibility as a prostitute), Leigh's performance makes it a much more than a maudlin tearjerker. Those who only know her from "Gone With the Wind" or "Streetcar Named Desire" might be surprised that she could play more than a tough-as-nails bitch or a delusional Southern belle. And also, is she not the most beautiful woman to ever step in front of a camera? (Look above.) *I have a soft-spot for all Vivien Leigh films, partly because of her tragic personal life. She was bipolar and had tuberculosis, and then Laurence Olivier left her. She died a couple years later, saying, "I would rather live a short life without Larry than face a long life without him." When Olivier himself was an old man he would pop in movies of Vivien Leigh and cry. Waterloo Bridge can, again, be found on Amazon for pennies.

I don't blame you. It's a really long movie for being about pretty much nothing.I think it's the most seen Ozu film because it was the first one released in the West. But it's definitely not the best intro to Ozu, in my opinion. |

The to films of Ozu I've seen are Tokyo Story and Floating Reeds. Are there any other good ones? |
