NEW YORK -- Stacy London doesn't need a script or characters for her new TV show -- she has clothes, which, she says, always tell a good story.
"Fashionably Late With Stacy London" debuts Friday at 10 p.m. on TLC, and the simple premise is to let London, the sassy stylist from "What Not To Wear," be herself. She muses about her favorite handbags and least favorite trends, and puts potentially ridiculous runway looks to the test in real life.
"If 'What Not To Wear' is who I am when I'm working, this is what I am after work. I'll ask someone in the audience, 'Where did you get those great shoes?' " London explained.
She added: "I talk about what I'm wearing at the start of the show. I ask the audience, 'Do you like it?' "
It would be hard for them to say no, says 38-year-old London, describing her "Fashionably Late" wardrobe as one pretty cocktail dress after another.
Rebecca Romijn, Amanda Bynes and Mariel Hemingway are among the celebrity guests who visit the show for a quick review of things they've worn before. They can gush about favorites, try to explain their way out of a fashion faux pas or use the outfit as a springboard for other conversations.
London even gives audience members the once-over, but, she says, the point isn't to judge.
"Fashionably Late" has a broad definition of style -- not just high fashion, but also home decor, entertaining and cooking.
But the occasional flaw makes it easier for London to connect with the audience. Ultimately she says she wants to help them look and feel their best. She wants others to learn how to make style empowering.
