According to the Survivor wikipedia page: "Mark Burnett has also received criticism for "reenacting" scenes with actor "stand ins"
which he claims were used to increase production value and did not affect the outcome."
Anyone know what these scenes are/ what episodes they're in? |

At times, Stephenie was far away from camp for so long for all her confessionals that they placed a cardboard cut-out of Stephenie back at camp to throw the other players off. Sadly, all of them fell for it, especially Rafe. And the guy we all were told on screen was "Gary Hogeboom" was actually Gary Hawkins. |

The challenges.
No, really. They have people test the challenges and use that footage sometimes. |

This isn't new. It was a controversy going all the way back to Borneo. They almost always use stand ins for insert or closeup challenge shots. Burnett
does this because it's cheaper and easier logistically than just going back and shooting the challenge again. For a really good example, look at the first
person shot of Rodger jumping off that cliff in Australia (where he is looking straight down as he jumps). There's no way Rodger was holding a hand-held
camera when he made that jump. That's a stand in. Opponents of reality TV found out about this stuff back in 2000-2001 and they all went apeshit.
"It's manipulated! It's fabricated!" No it's not. That's just good TV.

Aha, leave it to the anti-reality folks to make a mountain out of a molehill.

Pretty much. There has been a vendetta against reality TV almost since the moment it started. Right off the bat, mainstream media and TV shows were
threatened by it. They knew how dangerous/powerful it had the potential to become.

The entire Gabon cast are stand-ins. The same people they used to 'test' the challenges are actually the contestants. They've decided to do away
with real people entirely.

yeah I remember back during the Outback there was a story on ET of them reenacting some of the challenges with actors... In particular I remember it being
like the first reward challenge, or maybe second immunity challenge(?) when they jumped off a cliff into water and swam out to something... or was it Access
Hollywood?

Well it is either have stand-ins or a shittily made TV show. It is basically like using stunt doubles.

They use stand-ins to re-enact challenges and every helicopter shot you see is stand-ins (otherwise you'd see all of the camera people / sound people /
producers etc.)
They use the dream team or stand-ins to do those demonstrations of the challenges shown when Jeff is explaining the challenge (of course). They also use stand-ins for helicopter / far away shots for dramatic moments. They use them all the time, but the most obvious ones that I remember specifically are: Fiji: Sylvia on Exile Island. They had a helicopter shots of her on the island, but the stand-in was notably heavier than Sylvia! Cook Islands: the tribute to fallen comrades segment. I remember as they were burning the torches, the helicopter shot showed the final four, and once again, Becky's stand-in looked heavier than Becky. |

when Roger jumped form the cliff they showed what was supposed to look like from his point of view, but the stand in had long black board shorts on and Roger
had like yellow normal length shorts or something (I've been watching my Outback DVD ;) )

I watched an episode of The Amazing Race with a guy who worked on the show and he kept pausing and saying things like "Ok you see that shot there of the
hand pickup up the clue?" (that was supposedly a cast memeber) "That's my hand and we shot it in the parking lot of the production office two
weeks ago." It's never stuff like dialogue or something important, it's just the pick up shots, the moments where they know they'll need the
shot of someone turning, a hand reaching up, etc. At least that's for TAR...I'd only assume a similar policy for Survivor. At the end of most game
shows there's a disclaimer that portions of the game not affecting the outcome have been edited or removed." I don't think I've seen the same
disclaimer at the end of Survivor though.

Well that's because they did affect the outcome.
