It's time travel / manipulation. With this and "Mittlelos" and the hints from the producers I don't see how anyone could argue against it now.

timetravel must play some important role. Desmond knows things from the future. and i remember in season 1 when Walt came to Locke when he was working on opening the hatch (which Walt didn't know about) and said "don't do it! whatever it is don't do it". so he knew something too...

Yeah, this pretty much settles it. The grande theory must have something to do with time and space travel/anomalies.
Desmond's time-travelling hints, the 70 year uterus in a 20 something body, etc. Everything seems to be pointing to a change in time. |

Note that time was normal for at least part of the series so far. Both Locke, who had come from off the island, and Desmond, who had been on the island already, agreed on the date of the plane crash and the number of days since. Though the implosion may have sent the island backward or forward in time, it passed normally enough for the Others to know about events outside the island. Up until the implosion, it was definitely autumn 2004 for both the island and the outside world.

Well, at least one definition of science fiction is phenomena that could potentially happen according to the laws of science, but not within scientific principles as they are applied currently. So they could be pulling the old Ben Kenobi on us with that statement.

That message sounds more philosophical than based in physics. It could be a training technique for flexible thinking, in other words "You can't leave this room untill you figure out the secret message buried inside of it" kind of brain-teaser, albeit extreme brain-teaser. It's hard to tell if the Others realize that the swan hatch imploded or that time has actually changed since they are still trying to contact the outside world. It sems like that's a crazy powerpoint or highly edited video presentation that took a lot of time to create. It does appear to be the first multimedia presentation on the island that isn't an old crappy movie on 16 mm film. Dude, it was more like a rave with a most excellent stereo!

I agree that it could definitely just be philosophical, part of the brain-washing, but if they intend to use time travel to explain phenomena such as the island curing Locke and Rose, that might be interesting...and for some reason, more believable (at least to me) than some of the other theories I've heard.

I googled "only fools are enslaved by time and space" when this first came up just to see if the phrase was anything of interest, but since it must have been a couple of days since this broke it was mostly Lost results. Anyway, I found this quoted post at the Fuselage (I would guess it is supposed to be by the guy who made the audio recording, I didn't investigate any further)
