I think they just filmed three endings to hinder the real ending from leaking out.

eta: ok I just actually watched them and even the hosts say they are camouflage. Funny though, I don't think either Desmond or Sawyer would have fit in with Kate's "Why would I go to the funeral?" line. She clearly had disdain for whoever died and I don't think Desmond or Sawyer would fit that bill. But anyway, it don't matter now! :lbf

I don't know if it's just because we already saw the real ending but I don't think either of those 2 would've been as effective/shocking as
Locke in the coffin.

I'm a huge John fan, so I didn't love that ending....
however, I was really horrified to see Desmond in there! Glad it was only a diversion. |

I'm so glad that they didn't use either of the two alternate coffin endings.....that would've been a bummer for quite a number of people, and simply didn't make any sense as well....

They were more a stop gap to prevent leaks rather than actual alternatives to use on the show. It was always going to be Locke.

Here is the ending they SHOULD have used...
Ben talks to Jack... camera starts to reveal who is in coffin... coffin contains... BEN! Again. There are two Bens at a time. That would have made my day |

Well, the alternate endings didn't really help as the identity of the person in the coffin was spoiled anyway.
