Here's item #2. I don't think this is spoiler but it's from a future eppy. This thing appears to have such a nice strong collimated beam that I might like to buy one.



This thing is rather large so I'd guess it uses 2 D or 2 C batteries. It might also use some custom rechargeable battery unit. The bulb is most likely halogen but it could be one of those new super bright LED bulb with a high quality reflector. The business end of the flashlight has a rather distinctive focusing ring, if that's what it is. The closest I could find was a Smith & Wesson light. (Who knew they made anything other than guns?) It's close but not exactly the same. The one from LOST appears to have a thumb activated switch and maybe even shows a hint of a logo. I can almost make out the letter "S". But the ones off the Smith & Wesson site don't seem to use the logo, just the name. Maybe older lights used the logo???

I think the business end of the SL4 looks a bit different. The SL4 also comes in an LED version (38 lumens vs. 113 lumens). A nice light but probably not the same thing. Maybe there will be better views when that eppy airs.



I've always been curious about flashlights used in movies and TV. How much of that stuff is off the shelf product and how much is modified or re-engineered lights to get a stronger beam? Thinking back to the Alien movies or Star Trek:NG they probably could have had ac power cords snaked up their sleeves to power high intensity bulbs. That plus a fog machine and you've got some good Hollywood lighting effects! I'd assume that whatever they use on LOST is generally off the shelf material, or something old from a thrift shop!

The strongest "flashlight" I've seen is the AE PL24 Powerlight that uses an HID bulb and puts out 1300 lumens. That's not bright, that's blinding! Unfortunately at around $350 it's not the type of thing you'll need for your average lighting tasks. That sucker is for police who can also use that thing as a beating baton.

I think you're right about the Moto thing. I looked for Moto 2-way radios a few weeks ago but couldn't find one that looked like the ones from LOST. As a matter of fact on the eppy where Kate talks to Jack from the beach I think there was a brief view of the front of the radio, but alas, I don't have a screen cap of that. I found something that could the same radio although the antenna looks to maybe be a bit shorter. But it does have the ridges so the one here on the left could be it. I think the front of the radio looked a lot like that one. Moto CP100 radios, VHF and UHF.

Obviously the LOST crew would want to use some sort of licensed radio so they wouldnt' have the general public listening to stuff or broadcasting stray signals. Even if the actors don't broadcast their lines with the radios I bet those are the radios the crew use during filming. Aren't there any folks out there with scanners who could do some good spoiling?
