Jon Stewart will host (assuming the show is televised this year). As I posted in the other thread, No Country for Old Men is the big frontrunner, but There Will Be Blood was just named Best Picture by the National Society of Film Critics. Juno and Into the Wild are gaining momentum. Atonement is losing momentum, as audiences here haven't warmed to the film like British viewers did. Daniel Day-Lewis is the huge favorite to win Best Actor.

Even tho I only watch the red-carpet crap and sleep thru until the big ones are given out... So far out of all the possible contenders (that I've watched) Juno's my favourite... I absolutely HATED No Country for Old Men and Atonement was meh... But how come The Kite Runner hasn't been nominated or even mentioned? Thats like the best book ever I was positive the movie would at least get some nods...

If this is a frontrunner in 2007, then Hollywood needs to get its act together. I just cringe at what 2008 might bring with the writer's strike. I really wanted to see Juno, and I love Ellen Page (FTW!!!), but I have a pair of friends (who are normally smart, if cynical) who walked out because they couldn't stand the dialogue. I'll prob see it, but alone since my film buddy already doesn't want to see it. Heck, it made $16+M (#3) at the B.O. this weekend!

Will Johnny Depp ever win... well maybe he still has a chance but I think DDL's going to edge him out. 2007 is a strange beast. We might see the academy pull a John McCain and with all other contenders beating each other up the best picture ends up going to some huge longshot that nobody ever expected. 3:10 To Yuma FTW? Persopolis? Dare I say... Juno? Or even Sweeney Todd? Anyway I'm throwing out a lot of names but no answers, I think the GG's will have a effect as usual but maybe a counter effect, the Oscars wanting to stay controversial or even relevant will choose anything BUT what the GG's pick. And I of course will be rooting for King of Kong to win best documentary, finally legitimizing gaming culture forever. Maybe...

On Metacritic, it is only one point behind last year's BP winner, The Departed.

If Atonement came out last year, it would have had a good shot at winning. This year there is more competition. To be honest, I wouldn't be completely shocked if Atonement got snubbed and didn't get a BP nomination. I figure No Country for Old Men, There Will Be Blood, Into the Wild, and Juno are probable nominations. Atonement, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, Sweeney Todd will be battling it out for the 5th nomination. It could go either way. Michael Clayton and American Gangster are longshots, but could also get that 5th spot.
