Rewatching it in order is something you HAVE to do. There are all kinds of obscure characters that make comebacks that you don't 'get' with 9 months between seasons.

It didn't just stand up to a repeat play. It was BETTER the second time around.

watching the wire is like falling in love.

season 1 got my attention.

season 2, as we got to know each other, showed me an intriguing side.

season 3 was when it got nasty.

and with season 4 there were children.

1) Season 4 -- the pinnacle of television as far as I'm concerned.
2) Season 1

4) Season 5
5) Season 2

But it's almost pointless to rank individual seasons. This show is one season consisting of 60 episodes. And taken as a whole, probably the finest achievement in the history of scripted television.

1. Season 5 - they did more with less, If you didn't like the final episode you had episode 9, If you didn't like episode 9 you had episode 7. Each season seemed to be written by different great playwrights/authors. This was this was the Aeschylus plays of old rewritten today, these stories are all about tradition, circumstances beyond their control, and moral ambiguities.

I think just about everybody agrees season 4 is the best. Season 3 was kinda weird for me. When watching it, I was a little let down by it, but in retrospect it really holds up. Season 3 & 4 are probably the two most closely linked seasons of the show, its almost like a part 1 and 2.
