I believe it gave Desmond VISIONS of the future. He didn't actually travel back in time, because there would have been two Desmonds at the speech then. The writeres want us to question how far in the future did desmond see? Do he know everyone's outcome?

I guess that's possible but with Locke's visions it's usually pretty clear what is a vision and what's actually really happening. Desmond died in the hatch explosion, and Hurley (who's definitly got some supernatural powers) is the only one seeing and talking to Desmond, a la "The Sixth Sense".
