It's not like they have a lot of gift shops on the island. She could have brought Jack flowers but that would be too forward, and Ben would have noticed something that dramatic. I think that's all she could have done to indicate sensitivity towards Jack. Either that or show him some more bare skin on that video she played for him. Just think of the possibilties!

It kind of depressed me that I sat through the whole preview for that movie and all I kept thinking about was Lost.

The toothpicks were unnecessary .. and that's what made them special. She is so messing with Jack's head.

I'm sorry I have nothing to add to the toothpick discussion, but I wanted to say that I rewartched this episode last night, and I liked it much better on the second viewing. I still thought some parts were boring, but I think I've been too susceptible to the hype/too high expectations. Next week is supposed to be another "don't miss the most groundbreaking discoveries ever" type episode, according to the previews. I'll try to tone down my expectations accordingly.

I thought Juliet did it as a friendly gesture toward Jack, just a small subliminal way to show that she was on his side. In essence trying to get him into a mindset to be more willing to whack Ben on the operating table.

A toothpick may be so much more than just a sign of caring and extra attention. In the hand of a surgeon a toothpick can become a deadly weapon. With enough toothpicks you could also make a raft and escape back to the main island. You could probably use a toothpick to pick a lock. If all else fails a toothpick or two can be used to commit suicide if things get really bad.

They also have CD collections with CD's that don't match the Jewel cases. They have books, lots of books stashed all around the island. Some of the books have imploded along with the hatch, no doubt travelling back in time to their respective authors so that they may be written in the first place. There is no longer generic food in supermarkets but it is still shipped to the island in some manner. And pretty soon Hurley will realize that you can get anything you want at Alice's...
