Being that we are now on Dec 22nd island time, how does this (if at all) figure into the season 3 finale or season 4 opener? I would think that an island filled of mostly Judeo-Christan plane crash survivors would feel far away from home around Christmas and after finding out the world thinks they are dead, depressed. Are the writers just going to pass over the season without Huley dressing up as Santa Claus to lighten up everyone's spirits, Desmond catching game for Christmas dinner, or...

On the sailing off the island thing.... it's possible the island screws up compas headings...I remember hearing about places where using a magnetic compas in the ocean doesn't work in some parts, only a gyrocompas works. So, Ben telling Michael to head out on bearing 325 could result in one long circle back to the island. Kind of like "Take course 325 so we'll see you in a month you asshole" That's why the underwater sonar beacon is so important, to give a fixed navigation...

With all that's happening regarding the Others, possible rescue, danger and peril and all, I don't think anyone's particularly in the MOOD for celebrating a holiday. If they're aware of the date at all. Besides, they're far too busy making preparations for war.
Even if Christmas comes AFTER the events of the Finale, I don't think the general gloomy mood is gonna be lifted. And there'll be dead people to bury and threats will still exist, and, well. . .

Except for the fact that Desmond was shipwrecked you'd expect him to be a darn good sailor since he was entered in the boat race. If his compass were screwed up it should be noticeable as compared to the position of the sun in the sky during the day and the stars at night. (There must be an equivalent to the north star in the southern hemisphere, right?) If Desmond was drunk the entire time he was attempting to sail away that might explain things!
well, if you've ever owned a sailboat, most of us just go where the wind takes us then go back to the slip - it's called recreational sailing. In a desperate case like Lost you would still follow the wind I suspect plus compass readings. Of course the compass readings would be totally false. But the wind directions? you could "throw caution to the wind" as it were and hope it would take you where you need to go - or get OUT - of the loop you're in.
Why was Desmond unable to escape the island? Why did Ben mention that someone in a boat would simply travel in circles around the island? Is it because navigation by compass or electronic means (like GPS) is unpossible because of screwy electromagnetic effects? And what if you try to navigate by the sun, stars, and moon? Shouldn't that be possible if the sky appears to be normal from the island and surrounding waters? What's so special about using a heading of 325 degrees to escape the...

I don't think the island is literally invisible, it's just hidden to radar detection and the like, and is far enough out of the way that not many seagoers notice it. As stated by others, the sun gets through, and so do the stars (in fact if they had anyone with a basic knowledge of astronomy they would be able to estimate their position based on where and...

There's absolutely no reason to expect waves from the real world tsunami to affect the LOST island. We all know that it appears to be a relatively closed system with specific entry/exit points. Desmond simply sailed in a large circle and could not escape the island. So why would a tsunami wave be able to hit the island? (For that matter how would the sun be able to shine on the island either, but I digress.)
