Ladies and Gentlemen, a new theory about our friend:

What if he didn't exist at all until now? Ben took him there to yell at a chair and try to fool him, but suddenly the "box" created a person there just because Locke wanted one. That would explain why Ben was more scared after the encounter than before. Maybe Ben didn't think the power of the box extended into this particular hut, or he thought that that box wouldn't take want to take action but he was wrong either...

The kidney thing was discussed already in the spoiler thread. Yes, Locke was shot where his left kidney would have been. The bullet avoided hitting any major organs & since the kidney wasn't there, he won't have the internal bleeding he would have had if it was still there. In essence, Cooper saved Locke's life by taking his left kidney.

I just discovered this writer last week when Dark hosted her review of The Brig, and already she's become a fave. I'm a fan, for sure.

Maybe I'm just jaded, lol! Ben did seem to really be scared.

It was weird when he grabbed Jacob/chair and started yelling at him "Ok, you've had your fun!", it was like he was an imaginary friend or something. Here he normally seems so in deference to Jacob when he speaks of him to others yet he ran right up and acted like it was nothing to grab and shake and yell at him.

I like that idea, Merrilin, that Ben set the whole thing up in advanced with pyrotechnices and projectors and tape recorders...and didnt want Locke to use the flashlight cause he might see the strings :p

the only thing that makes me think thats NOT the case is because Ben looked truly afraid that Locke could hear Jacob. His whole demeanor changed. If this was a setup by Ben, why go through that act of acting scared? especially if he had planned to kill Locke all along. Furthmore, why...

For some reason the whole Jacob appearance thing reminds me of on old school shows (like Scooby Doo) when the bad guy would use projectors to make it look like someone was there that wasn't. Just the whole thing with Locke not "hearing" him until his back is turned and then Jacob not "appearing" until after Ben shakes the chair. The fire, I noticed upon second viewing, just stopped all of a sudden on it's own a little before Ben grabbed the chair. The lantern should...
