I certainly hope so, FeFe. I certainly think that Desmond's premonitions introduced us to the precedent of at least being able to alter the future, if not have altogether alternate timelines. But then again, there IS the course correction theory, which seems to be the ideal of the writers.

So, the question becomes, is there a way to make Jack's sad future NOT the "course correction"? Or is it Jack's fate to end up that way, like it was Charlie's fate to die?

Not sure how I feel about altering the flash forwards. Hmm. Yeah, Flashes and the Charlie visions gave us the concept of course...

Because we the viewers get to "look through the looking glass" at who these people become. It is WE who get the "previews of coming attractions." The characters don't know where they're going--yet. But WE do.

Perhaps to figure out what's going on with these flash forwards, we should be asking ourselves "Why did the producers title the episode (and the base) the Looking Glass?" Obviously, as is quoted above, the producers had a good reason to name it as such.

I think the station has a lot to do with what we saw in that episode... I just don't know how. Any ideas?

A lot of people on other sites have said it would be a cop-out to NOT have the FF we saw in the finale end up being the future that we progress towards. I completely disagree. I do think that there is a possibility that alternative timelines exist, and that things can be shifted and changed as time is tinkered with (most noteably by Desmond's flashes).

And plus, I just am filled with sadness thinking that my hero Jack would end up being a suicidal House knockoff. lol

Like an alternate reality maybe? I've heard someone (maybe a few people?) mention that this is the future but it isn't necessarily written in stone; that any number of things could alter what happens. Which makes sense if you look at it in the same context as the way Desmond's flashes work. So what we saw was Jack's future if things happened exactly as they did leading up to that. There are, however other possible scenarios and variances which could occur.

Jenni, thank you. That was exactly the point I was trying to make. When I heard in spoilers that Tom was going to be killed...I was upset. I'd grown to like him. That is what the writers wanted.
But... IF I was on the island with everyone...I'd be thankful Sawyer had taken care of Tom. Let's say everything was reversed. Let's say Tom had the drop on Sawyer and Sawyer said ok I surrender. Do you think Tom would have taken him as a hostage? I don't. Right or wrong...Sawyer saved someone's life by taking Tom out. The writers had lulled us...

Sawyer was a young child when the con and his parents' deaths took place. His feelings toward Cooper, and his subsequent grudge were formed from the perspective of a young child. They just festered as he got older.

I don't think it's at all unrealistic that the grudge was formed against Cooper rather than his father; nor do I find it unrealistic that he held it so long. Those events really set the course for who Sawyer became.
