If you've got a scandal about you're past that gets outed to the media then you will be gone quickly - regardless of how talented you are. The AI viewers want "squeaky clean" Idols with boring pasts - even if their talent is only medicore.

If you are a black male whose name is not Reuben Studdard, you are cursed. Nobody will take you seriously even if you have a really nice voice, and you will be gone prematurely. Something bad WILL happen to you. You will fail to be selected for the top 24, get sick, be outed as gay, forget your lyrics, or be mysteriously voted off on a night when you sang great so they can keep a skanky blonde singing superpatriotic bullshit. So don't even bother auditioning.

David Cook just broke the curse of singing 2nd on top 5 week. Previously it meant you would be sent home. So nothing is written in stone. There are some songs that are cursed, and yet people still go ahead and sing them. I read that Byrd always tell them "so and so did this and was sent home" and they still want to sing it.
