I rewatched this episode last night and caught something I missed the first time around.

When Claire woke up and saw Christian holding Aaron, the first thing she said was "Dad?" Interestingly, she said it exactly the same way Locke said it when he saw his old man tied up in Ben's dungeon.

smokey has chased kate a couple of times, once with Juliet and both times they sheltered in a tree, which didn't seem totally safe and I wonder if smokey did not really want to harm them just interact. "reading them or sending some kind of message"....the same with Jack,
So is it's job to protect the island and harm only those who are truly "bad"?
Locke was not afraid in the one interaction where it almost pulled him...

And Locke wanted to go down the pie-hole! He knew, somehow, he wasnt going to die. Most likely he would have been rewarded of seeing a lair that Ben had access too beyond that...

Did Ben necessarily get dirty activating Smokey? Maybe he got dirty going to another time off island to confront Widmore?

Then why would smokey chase after Jack in the past? Jack has never killed anyone in cold blood.

Well i doubt they knew about ben's secret room where he could call the monster so i dont think they would freak out and shoot her the moment he stepped away from the window. But what you said about him thinking he could save her is definately right. When i saw them shoot her I ZOMGed.

Uuh...because Keamy would've seen that Ben wasn't by the window anymore? And by the time Ben gets back from his secret room Alex is lone gone. Keamy would've shot her shortly after Ben goes to his Smokie summoning place.

Plus I think Ben thought he could convince Keamy not to shoot Alex.

so was it usually jacob who directed Ben (or anyone?) else to let Smokey loose and when Ben was out of favor could he not do it then.....so many strange details I am pondering, smokey is sort of like the holy ghost.......

Yeah I agree. I think Smokey does what Smokey wants most of the time. Ben just rings the dinner bell once in a while.

I think it might be more along the lines of that Ben can control Smokes in the sense that he can de-activate him in some way, but leaves him alone to be autonomous most of the time.

I was actually thinking along those lines too...the images that were seen in smokey..like it is "reading them" and then I remember how it pulled Locke into a hole and Jack saved him, but Locke was ready to go-- not afraid,

I never understood why it killed Eko and how that jibes with Jacobs list and who is "bad"

also interesting is how Hurley is able to see the cabin where Ben and Locke can't because he is in favor with Jacob, I also think it is...

Ben-centric

Ben's previous flashbacks are revealed to have been flashforwards, and that the island is making him age in reverse. Sawyer angers the camp when he starts telling secrets about everyone on his public video blog. Faraday paces around muttering to himself and avoiding eye contact.
