OK latest news is that there is a studio apartment right near UCLA that looks promising. Does that sound like a good idea? The students in the SLO area can be a little loud will it be worse in a big city? I can probably live with that as long as it isn't a trashy place like where I stayed in upstate NY last summer for four months.

I am warning you, do NOT live near UCLA. Traffic/parking there is a nightmare and if you are "too old" for that...

If you hate dealing with heavy traffic at all hours of the day, west LA, Santa Monica, and Westwood are not for you. You could not pay me to live there. Less crowded but equally nice areas to live are the all south of LAX: El Segundo, Manhattan Beach, and Torrance. Slightly less expensive places are Hawthorne and Lawndale. I'll throw in San Pedro just for good measure. Just choose a place west of the 405 Fwy and you'll be satisfied.

It isn't like the pretty gay people are going to throw rocks at me. At worst they will ignore me. I have zero interest in meeting or having sex with them so it really shouldn't be a problem RoMa. And I've been to L.A. several times. There are tons of normal people there too.

Looks like the L.A. thing is going to work out. Anyone live there that can give me tips on nice neighborhoods to live and scary dangerous areas that I should avoid? My father has friends and family in I believe Westwood (south of Beverly Hills is that right?) and I liked it. I also wouldn't mind living somewhere that is fairly close to the ocean. Anywhere affordable like that or is it all billionaire movie star mansions? Also my impression of L.A. when I have been there before was...
